Connecting with the Macintosh: MacSLIP & MacTCP

The instructions in these documents are specifically for using the older ACCC dialin lines. If you're dialing in using the newer ACCC dialin lines, see Using the New Style Lines. If you're dialing in using a commercial Internet Service Provider, you should follow your ISP's instructions, but you might also find the information in these documents useful.
  • Macintosh Computers before system 7.5.2 use MacTCP for networking by default. MacTCP can be used in combination with MacSLIP or PPP to connect to UIC via our dialin servers. This document describes how to configure MacTCP and MacSLIP together to connect to UIC with a modem.
  • If you are using a newer Macintosh, look for the configuration information on our main Dialin page.
  • If you need information on using MacTCP to connect from a campus Ethernet connection, check the Connecting to the UIC Network via Ethernet Page.

MacSLIP

  1. Go to the Apple menu, and select Control Panels. Select MacSLIP.
  2. Select the "Configure" option.
  3. The following are the configuration settings:
    • Set name: [ Leave this area blank for the moment. ]
    • Script: ADNii script. [ If it is not set to ADNii script, you can set it by choosing the "Set" option. Go to the hard drive,double-click on
MacSlip f, double-click Scripts, and click on ADNii Script. ]
    • Log: Off
    • Port: Modem Port. [ If you have installed your modem on the
    • Printer port, then choose Printer port instead. ]
    • Speed: [ Choose the speed of your modem from the popup menu. ]
    • Compress: Automatic
    • MTU: 1006
    • Modem: [ Choose the kind of modem you have from the menu. If your exact modem is not listed, then choose the one closest to it. If you do not find a modem close to yours, click on "Edit," and choose "New." Enter the name of your modem. From your modem's manual, find the correct initialization string and enter it. Save this. Now your modem should be listed in the popup menu, and you can select it.
Note: Most modems support data compression of up to 4 times the modem's actual speed. That means the correct selection for the "Speed" item is the speed of your modem times 4. For example, a 14.4 modem would be 57,600, and a 28.8 modem would be 115,200. However, compression abilities differ for different modems, so you should check your modem manual to verify the correct compression speed.
    • The following options need to be selected:
    • Connect when MacTCP is opened: Every time.
    • Drop DTP on driver close
    • RTS/DTR input flow control
    • CTS output flow control
    • Notes for GEOPORT modems
Do not select "CTS output flow tone..." or "Do not answer..." For Speaker, choose "Modem sound on until carrier." Under Modem
Serial Setting, choose "Use Express Modem."
Also, in the MacSLIP control panel, make sure that CTS output
      flow control is not selected.
  4. Select the VARIABLES button. Click on Phone number, then EDIT. See the DIALINS Page to decide which phone number to use.

MacTCP
Go to the MacTCP Control Panels. Highlight the SLIP (or PPP if that's what you're using).
Then click on MORE... Then make sure you have the following settings:
  • Default Gateway address = 128.0.0.0
  • Obtain address or Configure = Server
  • Class = B
  • Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0 (use the pointer to change it in MacTCP)
  • Domain Name Servers:
For MacTCP, use the IP addresses and put a single dot (.) in the hostname column. For TCP/IP, just specify the IP addresses.
    128.248.2.50
    128.248.7.50
    128.248.171.50
Exit the control panel, choosing to save if it asks, then you will need to restart your Mac.
