Configuring Win95/98 for the Old-Style ACCC Dialin Lines

This document gives step-by-step instructions on how to configure Windows 95 or Windows 98 to use the Old-Style ACCC Dialin lines. Version 5.0 of the ACCC Network Services Kit includes a script that does the same things automatically and is MUCH easier to use. See Using Windows 95/98/Me with the Old-Style ACCC Dialin Lines for more information.

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) Setup

To begin, click on the Start button in the lower-left corner.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network.

In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP are listed.

  • If UIC is the only Internet Service Provider you use, Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP should each appear only once. If either is missing, you will need to add them: Adding the Dial-up Adapter (if not listed) and Adding TCP/IP Protocol (if not listed)
  • If you use another Internet Service Provider, keep the components with settings for that ISP and add components if necessary for UIC.
  • If there are identical listings for either the Dial-up Adapter or TCP/IP, remove one of them by clicking on the item and then clicking the Remove button.
  • If you use more than one ISP, you will see similar entries; the component you should configure for connection to UIC is the TCP/IP which is bound to the Dial-Up Adapter (TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter).

Note to Windows 95 users: There are occasions when the existence of multiple listings for Dial-up Adapter or TCP/IP can result in problems connecting. If you experience such a problem, one solution is to remove duplicate listings if they are not needed. If it is desirable to maintain more than one listing for the purpose of using multiple Internet Service Providers, then make sure that you have configured the correct components for connection to UIC and check all settings in the network components and dial-up networking connections used for UIC.

Adding the Dial-up Adapter (if not listed)

  1. Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network
  2. Click the Add... button.
  3. Select Adapter, then click the Add... button.
  4. Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
  5. Select Dial-up Adapter, then click the OK button.

Adding TCP/IP Protocol (if not listed)

  1. Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network
  2. Click the Add... button.
  3. Select Protocol, then click the Add... button.
  4. Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
  5. Select TCP/IP, then click the OK button.

--Configuring TCP/IP for UIC

In the Network control panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network), select TCP/IP (or TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter) from the list of installed network components, and click the Properties button. If Windows displays a warning about changing TCP/IP properties for a dial-up adapter, just click OK and continue. Configure the information under each of the 7 tabs which appear as follows:

  1. On the IP Address tab:
    • Select Obtain an address automatically.
  2. On the DNS Configuration tab:
    • Select Enable DNS.
    • Type any name for your computer in the Host name box.
    • Type uic.edu in the Domain name box.
    • In the DNS Server Search Order box, enter the 3 sets of numbers listed below. Do this by typing each set of numbers, one at a time, in the box next to the Add button and clicking on the Add button after each entry.
      128.248.2.50 -> click Add
      128.248.7.50 -> click Add
      128.248.171.50 -> click Add
      When you are finished, all 3 sets of numbers should appear in the larger box.
    • Do not add anything to the Domain Suffix Search Order box.
  3. On the WINS Configuration tab:
    • Select Disable WINS Resolution.
  4. On the Bindings tab:
    • Don't make any changes to components that may be listed. If there is nothing listed, leave it blank.
  5. On the Advanced tab:
    • The only thing that should be listed under "Properties" is None.
  6. On the Gateway tab:
    • No numbers should be listed.
  7. On the NetBIOS tab:
    • Nothing should be checked.

Save these configurations:

  1. Click OK on the TCP/IP Properties window.
  2. Click OK on the Network window to finish Adapter Protocol setup.
  3. Windows may ask for the Windows disks or CD-ROM.
  4. It should also ask to restart Windows. This is necessary for the changes to take effect.

Setting Up Your Old-Style UIC Dialin Connection

When you are back in Windows after restarting, click on Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications (Windows 98)->Dial-up Networking.

--Add Dial-up Networking if necessary

Note: If Dial-up Networking is not in the Accessories list, you will have to install it before proceeding. To do so, follow these 7 steps. Otherwise, skip them.

  1. Start->Settings->Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, then click the Windows Setup tab.
  3. Make sure that the box in front of Communications is checked.
    • If it is not, click on the box to make the check mark appear and then click on OK to install the communications software. You will have to insert your Windows CD or floppy disks.
    • If the box was already checked, select it and click on the Details button. Make sure there is a check in front of Dial-up Networking, then click OK on the Communications window.
  4. Click OK on the Add/Remove Programs window.
  5. Return to Dial-up Networking by clicking Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications (Windows 98 only)->Dial-up Networking.
  6. If both of the above boxes are checked, but Dial-up Networking still does not appear under Communications, you should call Microsoft Support for assistance.

--Setup your Old-Style UIC Dialin Connection:

  1. In Dial-up Networking (Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications (Windows 98 only)->Dial-up Networking), double-click Make New Connection.
    • If your modem is not listed in the Make New Connection window, go to the Control Panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel) and double-click Modems. Then click Add->Next. Windows will try to detect a modem; follow the prompts. You will need your Windows CD-ROM and/or modem installation disks.)
  2. Type UIC-Old (or any descriptive label) in the Computer Name field (the default is My Connection) and then click Next.
  3. In the Phone Number field, type the Old-Style dialin line phone number. You can make a separate icon for each number if you use by following these instructions for each one, assigning distinct descriptive labels as in the previous step.
  4. After typing the number, click Next, then Finish.
  5. An icon will appear in the Dial-up Networking folder called UIC-Old (or whatever you have named it).
  6. Click on UIC-Old with the RIGHT mouse button. Next (with the LEFT mouse button) click Properties and then the Configure button.
  7. Click the Options tab. Put a check in the box next to Bring up terminal window after dialing and make sure that Bring up terminal window before dialing is NOT checked. Then click on OK.
  8. Click the Server Types tab. For Type of Dial-up Server select:
    Windows 95: PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
    Windows 98: PPP:Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98
    The only boxes in that window which need to be checked for connection to UIC are those next to Enable software compression and TCP/IP. Do NOT check Require encrypted password. Having additional selections checked unnecessarily may slow down the connection.
  9. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Select Server assigned IP address and Server assigned name server addresses (it takes its values from the network settings you already configured).
    Also be sure to check both of the bottom boxes next to Use IP header Compression and Use default gateway on remote network.
  10. Click the OK button, then click the OK button one more time on the UIC-Old (or the name you have given your connection) window.
