Connecting to the UIC-Net Campus Network via Ethernet

UIC's campus backbone is currently made up of multiple, diverse gigabit links. There are several 10gigabit links but they are dedicated to specific research projects. The campus backbone has not yet been upgraded to 10gigabit because we do not yet require quite that much capacity for general Internet connectivity. As demand goes up, we will convert to 10gig (or to the next generation network). In the meantime, we continue to add gigabit links to the backbone where needed.

How to obtain a new connection

  • To request a new connection for an existing wall jack (bjack) in your office, you should contact the REACH representative in your department. Don't know who that is? Look up your department on the UIC A-Z page, or call the CSO at (312)413-0003 and ask them.

  • If your department do not have a REACH representative, or he/she is not available, contact the Client Services Office.

  • If you would like a Network Connection to a room in which there is not yet a wall jack, then you will first need to contact the Telecommunications division -- Data Services section -- of the ACCC.

Basic Information

If you have a Registered IP Address:

You will need the following:

  • Your machine's IP Address (and make sure it is registered; check with your department's REACH representative)
    • East side IP addresses begin with: 131.193.
    • West side IP addresses begin with: 128.248.
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Router address: Type the first three parts of your machine's IP address and then 1 as the fourth part. Thus, if your IP address was 128.248.5.122, then your Router would be 128.248.5.1
  • DNS Name Server addresses:
    • 128.248.2.50
    • 128.248.7.50
    • 128.248.171.50
  • Search domains: uic.edu This is the default ending your machine will put on if you type, for example: ssh tigger

If you are using DHCP:

The DHCP server should set up your IP address, a Subnet Mask, and Router up for you. (See Registered IP Address above.)

  • Add the DNS Servers as below.
    • 128.248.2.50
    • 128.248.7.50
    • 128.248.171.50
  • Search domains: uic.edu This is the default ending your machine will put on if you type, for example: ssh tigger

How to set up your network connection

If you're connecting to the campus network from a campus office or lab, your computer must have an assigned and registered IP address and host name or you must use DHCP. Don't which you're supposed to use? Ask your department's REACH member. Don't know who that is? Look up your department on the UIC A-Z page, or call the CSO at (312)413-0003 and ask them.

For instructions for using Res-Net in the resident halls, see Res-Net Configuration Web page; it has instructions for all these operating systems.
