Question 3.2 Hints for troubleshooting Odyssey
- Whenever attempting to resolve a wireless problem,
always check the Odyssey status buttons (at the lower right of the Odyssey main screen for clues that may help
reveal the problem. Click and holding the left mouse
button on a status buttons will reveal extra information
about your connection.
- Verify that the Odyssey Client has the UIC Autoscan
list selected in the Connect to network field. Doing this will reduce the
overall number of problems that you can encounter.
- Verify that your Autoscan List is
configured to cycle through all possible networks.
- Remember that updating or recreating a setting effects
the settings in other areas of Odyssey. For example, if
you change the name of the UIC-Wireless
profile, the Networks
configuration and Autoscan List
will need to be updated to reflect this change.
- If you edit your personal (home) network and enter a WEP, be aware that the key type will
reverts back to ASCII characters. If you have a hexadecimal key
stored, you must move the key type back to Hexadecimal
digits in the Format for entering keys field every
time you want to modify this screen.
- Is the IP address that you are obtaining valid? UIC Valid IP Addresses has a
list of valid IP addresses for your UIC-Wireless
area.
Question 3.3 I'm having trouble with my connections. Help!
Question 3.4 There's a delay in getting new IP address when moving between networks. What's
up?
- If you move about with your PC and you connect to an access point on a different
network, you will be assigned a new IP address on that new network. There
is sometimes a delay of up to 45 seconds in acquiring the new address.
- This is normal, and is controlled by the IP stack and operating system.
Question 3.5 Make sure the date is set correctly on your machine or Odyssey will not work.
- Odyssey checks the system date to make sure it's within the Odyssey license
dates.
- To change the system date in Windows, point your mouse cursor to the clock
on the task bar and double-click on it; the window that opens has options
to change the date and time.
Question 3.6 Having trouble logging in? (Unable to Authenticate)

Symptoms:
- Displayed Status is: authenticating
Error message:
Result: Failure
Reason: Client Credentials were not available
- Resolution:
- Make sure that you edit your Profile Properties and make sure that your
UIC netid is down for Login name. The default for the Odyssey login
name for is the name on
the account that you use to login to your laptop, which may be null in Windows
98. In the Odyssey client,
- click the Profiles button.
- select the UIC Wireless Profile.
- click on Properties button
(the Edit Profile Properties window should open).
- type you netid in the Login name box.
- select the prompt for password option.
- click OK to exit the Edit Profile Properties window.
- click the Reauthenticate button.
Question 3.7 I uninstalled my network card and reinstalled it
and it's not showing in Odyssey -- it says "Adapter not available." Help!
- Symptoms:
- Unable to detect/connect to the network.
The main status window displays:
Adapter
not available.
- Resolution:
- This error often occurs when you remove and reinstall or update the
driver for your network card. This can also occur when the network device
is disabled or when your wireless is "off".
- If you have just installed a new driver for your network card:

- In the Odyssey client:
- click on the Adapter button
- remove your currently listed adapter by selecting it
and clicking on the Remove
button.
- re-add your adapter by clicking the Add button and
selecting your adapter from the list.
- If your network device is disabled:
- You need to
Re-Enable the adapter:
In the Odyssey client, select Start-Menu -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections ->
Network Connections, then right-click on your (wireless) network adapter
and select enable.
Question 3.8 I can't find my wireless adapter in the Odyssey Client Manager Connection
Adapter drop down list. What can I do?
- It is possible you did not have the wireless card plugged into your laptop
when you installed the Odyssey client.
- Insert your wireless card. In the Odyssey Client Manager, click the Adapters
icon, then click the Add button and add the adapter. (See above.)
Question 3.9 Before making the connection, I get a pop-up window asking whether I should
trust "Odyssey1.cc.uic.edu/Odyssey2.cc.uic.edu". What shall I do?
- These are UIC Wireless servers; you can trust them. Check Add this
trusted server to the database and click Yes.

Question 4.1 I'm connected and my signal strength is strong, but still I get "Unable
to Access Internet". How can I fix this?
- Symptoms:

- Connection Status: "Open and Authenticated"
Signal Strength is strong
Unable to Access Internet
- Resolution:
- This problem can originate whenever a user has an IP address configured
statically. To resolve the problem, either set your computer to obtain a dynamically
allocated IP address, or move the statically allocated IP to the alternate
configuration window.
For instructions on how to tell a Windows machine to obtain a dynamically allocated IP address:
- For Windows XP Only:
- If you need a static IP address for you normal network configuration, you can move the static IP to address to an alternate configuration window. This will set your IP statically if an IP cannot be obtained dynamically. This option is only available for Windows XP. This option can cause problems in cases where you need a static IP
address on a departmental or home network that uses DHCP.
In Windows XP, to move the static IP address to the alternate configuration window:
Start-Menu ->
Control -> Network
Connections ->
right-click on Wireless adapter, and select Properties.
Question 4.2 How do I set Odyssey up for my home network?
Question 4.3 I've recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 or added a new user to my XP
machine and my Odyssey
client will no longer authenticate. Clicking and holding
Red Odyssey status icon shows the message:
"Client issued alert 46, certificate unknown" How do I fix this?
We've found that SP2 somehow messes with the certificate store on
Windows XP.

Symptoms:
- Result: Failure
Reason: Client issued alert 46
(certificate unknown)
Type: EAP-TTLS
This error can occur after adding a new account to Windows XP after Odyssey is installed.
Odyssey automatically creates the configuration data, but Window's XP Service Pack 2
may interfere with the data creation and some of the data may be out-of-date.
The certificate it is configured to use is expired. (Valid from 07/16/1999 to 08/16/2004).

Resolution (quick):
- Log on to the windows profile that is not working. Open the Odyssey client.
Click on the button
labeled Trusted
Servers. Remove the UIC-Wireless Network. Re-add it.

Resolution (detailed):
- Remove and Re-add the Trusted Servers

- click the Trusted Servers
icon located on the left side of the screen.
- highlight and Remove all Trusted Servers that have the word "odyssey" in them.
- click the Add button.
- type the following for the Server domain name must end with field: odyssey1.cc.uic.edu
- click the Browse button.
- click on the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab. NOTE: Make
sure you have the Trusted Root tab selected and not the
Intermediate tab.
- Select the following entry: Thawte Server CA
BE SURE YOU SELECTED THE CORRECT ENTRY!
- click OK
- click OK (again)
Repeat the above instructions, with the following change:
When finished, the Trusted Servers options should look
like this.
Question 4.4 Why can't my Windows Odyssey detect the UIC-Wireless
network? (And it's even worse -- I use Windows XP, and Odyssey works on one account,
but not on another.)

Symptoms:
- On Windows XP, Odyssey connects on one Windows XP user's profile, but if that user logs out and then tries to use it Odyssey from another user account, Odyssey doesn't detect UIC-Wireless.
In other varieties of Windows, Odyssey does not detect the UIC-Wireless network.

Resolution (outline):

- Log on to the Windows account/profile where Odyssey is not working.
- Open the Odyssey client.
- Click on the icon on the left labeled
Networks,
remove the UIC-Wireless Network.
- Re-add it.
- After re-adding it, be sure to update the
Auto-Scan List
to use the new UIC-Wireless Network.
- Resolution (details):
- Remove and Re-add the Network
- in the Odyssey main screen, uncheck the Connect to network check box.
- select Networks icon located on the left side of the screen.
- select the UIC Wireless network. Click Remove to remove it.
- click on the Add button.
- type UIC-Wireless for the Network name.
- leave Connect to any available network unchecked.
- verify that Access point (infrastructure mode) is the selected Network type.
- select open as the Association mode.
- select WEP as the Encryption method.
- check the Authenticate using profile: checkbox
- select UIC-Wireless as the profile
- check the Keys will be generated automatically checkbox.
- click OK.
When finished, the Networks screen should look like this.
- Modify the Auto-Scan List
- in the Odyssey main screen, select the Auto-Scan Lists icon located on the left side of the screen.
- click on the UIC entry and click on the Remove button.
- click on the Add button.
- enter UIC under the Auto-Scan list name field
- move all of the entries listed on the Available networks screen to
the right screen by clicking on the >> button.
- click OK.
When finished, the Auto-Scan screen should look like this.
- Reconnect
- in the Odyssey main screen, select Connection icon, and select UIC
from the the Connect to Network drop-down list.
- check the Connect to network check box in Odyssey's main screen
and make sure UIC is selected as the preferred network.
- click the Reconnect button.
When finished, the main Odyssey screen should look like
this.
Question 4.5 Warning for people using Windows 98 -- don't go into Standby Mode when running
Odyssey.
- Windows 98 cannot go into Standby mode while Odyssey Client is running.
If you need to go into Standby, quit Odyssey from the tray icon menu.
Question 4.6 I have Windows 98/ME operating system and when I plugin my wireless card,
the Odyssey Client Manager can't find it.
- Sometimes Windows 98/Me can't find the card quickly, please wait for
few seconds, if it still can't find it, reboot the machine.
Question 4.7 When I try to uninstall the old version of Odyssey client with Add/Remove
programs it hangs after a while. Why?
- If this happens, please remove the Funk Software Inc keys from the Registry
first and then try to uninstall the client using Add/Remove programs.
Question 4.8 After I enter the password I see the message "Waiting to authenticate"
and it stays like that for a while/never comes back. Why?
- A. It probably means you entered the wrong password.
- It will ask for eventually ask for your password again, but to avoid the
wait time click the Reauthenticate button; it will pop-up the password
box right away.
Question 4.9 I downloaded and installed the new Odyssey client but I can't connect to
UIC Wireless. I keep getting the "Searching for Wireless" message. What should
I do?
- If you downloaded the client during last week of February, please download
and install a fresh copy from the Web page as that version had a mistake in
its configuration.
- Or you can fix the mistake. Please follow these steps:
- Open the Odyssey Manager
- Click on Networks tab.
- Select UIC Wireless and click Properties.
- In the Network name (SSIS) field change the value from UIC
Wireless to UIC-Wireless.
Question 4.10 In the new Odyssey Client, when I check the Connect to Network box
in Connections, I see 3 items in the list, "UIC, UIC Wireless, UIC Wired".
I'm confused; which one shall I select?
- Selecting UIC will make it find the right one connection,
- but if you want to be specific and if you are trying to connect using UIC
Wireless card select UIC Wireless,
- and if you are trying to connect using a wired connection select UIC Wired.
Question 4.11 I have tried everything I can to get my Odyssey to work. I have gone through
all the above possibilities and reinstalled Odyssey and it still won't work.
I'm all out of options; what do I do?
- The last resort would be to uninstall Odyssey completely, including
editing your Windows Registry in Windows. If not done correctly you could
damage your operating system and have to rebuild your machine so please follow
carefully.
- First remove your Odyssey client via Add/Remove Programs in your
Control Panel.
- Then Reboot.
- You will need to go to your Windows Registry (Start->Run type
regedit then press Enter).
- Under HKEY_CURRENT USER/Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software
there are folders named Funk Software, Inc; delete those folders.
- Reboot.
- Reinstall Odyssey from the download page.
- Reboot.
- Try using the client again and see if symptoms are remedied.
Question 4.12 How do I turn off my PC's other wireless utility? My Odyssey connection keeps
connecting and disconnecting.
- The Odyssey Client is a great tool, and if used properly it should be the only form of
802.1x network management that you need to use on your computer. In order to achieve
this you should disable the other forms of 802.1x network management that may be
installed on your machine. (For instance any software based network management utilities
that came bundled with your 802.1x/WiFi card, or your operating systems built-in
wireless management utility.)

For example, in Windows XP you should disable Windows internal handling of wireless networks by clicking:

Start-> Control Panel -> Network Connections
then right click on your wireless network connection and click on Wireless Networks tab.

You will see a checkbox labeled Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.
Be sure that this box is NOT checked.
-
If the box is checked, or you do not disable any other wireless network management software
you will see your wireless connectivity constantly disconnecting and then reconnecting.
This is an indication that the Odyssey Client is struggling with another wireless
network management client and that the other software should be disabled.
Question 4.13 How can I find other wireless networks?
- The Odyssey Client can be used to connect to networks and find SSIDs at public wireless
hotspots and conferences.
- To find and connect to local networks, open the Odyssey Client manager, click the
Connections icon from the right left hand side icon menu, and
click the Scan button on the right hand side.
- You will see a listing of all the networks SSIDs that you are in range of. Select a network to connect to.
- Please note that public wireless networks may not be secure -- you should not send sensitive
information across public wireless networks unless you are protected by a VPN client.
