Installing and Using SecureW2 for Windows

The ACCC supports SecureW2, open-source program for use on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista machines. After you install Secure W2, you don't run it as software in itself. Instead, it integrates into the Windows network configuration utility. The instructions in this page are for Windows XP and Vista. Windows 2000 depends on the software that comes with the wireless card you are using.

We have also discovered that the SecureW2 that is pre-configured for UIC doesn't install properly on all 64-bit machines. But you can manually install it on those machines. Configuring SecureW2 Manually has instructions on how in configure SecureW2 for UIC-Wireless manually.

It is easy to switch:

1. Uninstall Odyssey. Start Control Panel Add Remove Programs (XP) or Uninstall a Program (Vista) select Juniper Networks Odyssey and delete it. Don't bother saving the configuration, because you won't be using Odyssey again.
2. Then,
   • If you are using Windows Vista, you are finished.
   • If you are using Windows XP, you must tell it that you want your wireless connection managed by Windows after you install SecureW2.

• You can download Secure W2 on the Web using a machine in an ACCC lab or another of your own machines that already has an Internet connection; then copy it to a USB thumb/flash drive to move it to the laptop you are installing SecureW2 on.

• SecureW2 does not take over your machine's wireless connections like Odyssey did. When you install SecureW2, you add it as a connection option, and you create an additional connection that uses it.
  
  
• The SecureW2 UIC-Wireless connection is independent of and doesn't interfere with any other connections you might have, provided that you are just using the default Windows wireless management. (If you are using a utility that came with your wireless card for your other connection(s), then you will have to manually switch from UIC-Wireless to your other connection(s), but it still will not interfere with it.)
  
  
• SecureW2 is easy to install and configure. While you may still have occasional problems with your wireless connection and Windows Vista, you will find that it works much, much more smoothly than Odyssey did.
  
  
• If you have any problems, see the folks the ACCCeSS Helpdesk. (You shouldn't have any; this is pretty straightforward.)
  
  
• While you do not need to know how to configure SecureW2 to use it for UIC-Wireless, if you want to know the details of how to set SecureW2 up, see Configuring SecureW2 Manually. For more information, see Dynamic Security Solution's documentation, which at the time I write this is for a previous version that did not support Windows Vista. The information is the same.
  
  
• Don't want to use SecureW2? If you would like to try using software (e.g. Dell Wireless Utility, Intel ProSet Wireless, etc.) already installed on your computer, it must be able to support 802.1X security with the TTLS authentication protocol, and the TTLS inner authentication protocol of PAP. You must also add the Thawte Premium Server CA to the Verify Server Certificates option. If you would like help setting up your third-party software, please visit the ACCCeSS Helpdesk, and we will do our best to configure the software appropriately if possible, and if not, assist you in installing and configuring SecureW2.

These instruction are for Windows XP and Vista. Most of the illustrations are from Vista, but equivalent XP illustrations are provided when they are substantially different. (The illustrations are for your convenience; they do not add any additional information.)

Installing SecureW2 on Windows 2000 depends on the software that came with the wireless card you are using. Your best bet if you want to install SecureW2 on Windows2000 is to visit the ACCCeSS Helpdesk.

1. Copy UIC SecureW2 to your desktop. Double-click on the name of the SecureW2 Zip file to expand it.
2. Double-click on the name of the expanded SecureW2 .exe file, which will also expand.
   
   
3. A dialog box explaining that all files should be extracted will open; click Extract all.
   
4. Select a folder for the expansion; the default will work. Click Extract.
   
5. Open the expanded folder and double-click on the SecureW2...exe file.
   
6. In Vista, the User Account Control dialog box opens; click Allow.
7. A dialog box opens asking you to select a language. Do it and click OK.
   
8. On the SecureW2 Setup Welcome screen, click Next >.
   
9. The SecureW2 License is displayed, click I agree to continue.
   
10. Leave the Choose Components screen as it is, with TTLS selected, and click Install.
    
11. Click Reboot now and the Finish button on the Completing Setup screen.
    
    

After the Reboot

You must reboot to use SecureW2.

1. If you are using Windows XP and previously used Odyssey, you must tell it that you want your wireless connection managed by Windows after you install SecureW2 before you can proceed.
   1. Right-click on the Wireless Network icon in the System Tray. It looks like a computer with waves coming out of the right side of the monitor.
      
   2. Click on View Available Wireless Networks from the right-click menu.
      
   3. Click Change Advanced Settings.
   4. On the Wireless Network tab, check Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.
   5. Click OK.
2. You will see a balloon saying you need more information to connect to UIC-Wireless. Click on the balloon.
   
   
3. The additional information is your netid and ACCC password. Type your UIC netid in for the User Name: and your ACCC common password for the Password:.
    
4. Click Save user credentials if this is your computer and you trust that only you will be using it.
5. Click OK.
   

When you are logged into UIC-Wireless, pointing to the network icon in the System Tray in Vista will show the status.

In Windows XP, you have to click on the network icon in the System Tray to see the status. When your wireless is connected, the waves to the right of the wireless connection icon are green, rather than gray.

This process is a bit different in Vista and XP.

In Vista:

1. In Vista, click on the network icon in the System Tray, which is a computer on top of another computer, with something that I'll bet is supposed to look like circular arrows. (The third icon from the left in this illustration.) Then click Connect or Disconnect.
   
2. In this example, we're connected, so highlight UIC-Wireless and click Disconnect.
   
3. Are you sure? Click Disconnect again.
   

The process is exactly the same if you are disconnected and want to connect. If you didn't save your netid and password, it will prompt you to enter it.

In Windows XP:

1. In Windows XP, right-click on the wireless network icon in the System Tray. It looks like a computer with waves coming out of the right side of the monitor.
   
2. Click on View Available Wireless Networks from the right-click menu.
   
   
3. In this example, we're connected, so highlight UIC-Wireless and click Disconnect.
   
   
4. A dialog box opens asking if you are sure you want to disconnect; click Yes.
   
   
   
5. Reverse the process to connect. If the wireless icon is not in your system try, use Start Settings Network Connections.

Your SecureW2 connection to UIC-Wireless will not affect any other wireless connections that you already have. But you can use it to make additional connections if you wish. For an example of adding manually adding a connection to SecureW2, see Configuring SecureW2 Manually.
