Installing and Using Odyssey for Pocket PCs

What is Odyssey?

Juniper Networks' Odyssey client is the software that people using a Pocket PC needs to connect to and use the ACCC's UIC public wireless Internet network. The Odyssey client does four things for the Pocket PC wireless user.

  • Installs Odyssey software on the Pocket PC
  • Initiates and supervises the wireless connection.
  • Authenticates both the user and the network.
  • Encrypts the wireless connection.

A valid UIC netid and password, a personal computer running Windows to install the software from, the Odyssey for Pocket PC client, and a compatible wireless network card are required to use the ACCC public wireless connections points with a Pocket PC on the UIC campus. The use of this UIC public wireless network is free to members of the UIC community.

Getting the Odyssey Pocket PC Client

Make sure you choose the right one for your Pocket PC:

  • Odyssey for Pocket PC 2002 for people running Windows CE .NET version 4.2
  • Odyssey for Pocket PC 2003 for people running Windows Mobile 2003
  • Odyssey for Pocket PC for people running Windows Mobile 5

-- Get a Supported Wireless Card for Your Pocket PC and Install and Configure It

  1. Purchase and install a supported wireless network card.
    1. You still need to have a supported wireless network card to use Odyssey, but Juniper Networks is not keeping a list of supported cards anymore. What you need is a 802.11g wireless network card (or 802.11b, but that is much slower than the UIC-Wireless network is), that supports 802.1x with EAP-TTLS. The EAP-TTLS requirement means that not all wireless cards that support 802.1x work. But the boxes or specs for the wireless cards probably won't say "supports 802.1x and EAP-TTLS". But what will work and what will be on the box or in the specs is: supports WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) or WPA2 and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). If it says these two things it will work with Odyssey. If it only says it supports WPA, most likely that's good enough, but there is an odd card or two that supports WPA and doesn't support WEP.
    2. Follow the instructions that come with the card to install it. That will involved installing software on a Windows personal computer and then having the personal computer push the software down to the Pocket PC.

  2. When you're finished, there are two additional things you have to do on your Pocket PC:

  3. Tell your Pocket PC that it's going to be connecting to the Internet:
    1. On your Pocket PC, touch Start -> Settings -> the Connections tab -> the Connections icon.
    2. At the bottom, it will say My network card connects to:. Select The Internet from the dropdown list.

  4. Tell your wireless card to use EAP Security:
    1. Again on your Pocket PC, touch Start -> Settings -> the Systems tab. Find the icon for your wireless card and touch it. The card on the Pocket PC I'm working with is a Cisco Aironet, and its icon is labeled Aironet Client Utility. I'm using that as an example. It will be different but similar if you have a different card.
    2. Touch the Aironet icon.
    3. Highlight Profile0 and touch the Edit button.
    4. Touch Network Security Type from the list of options, and select Host-based EAP from the drop-down list.
    5. Touch the OK button.

Installing Odyssey for the Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003

The installation procedure is the same for both of these versions of Odyssey for Pocket PCs.

-- Install the Odyssey Configuration Manager on Your Windows Personal Computer

  1. Download Odyssey on the Web; save it to the desktop of your Windows personal computer or some convenient place. Make sure you download the right one for your Pocket PC:
    • Odyssey for Pocket PC 2002 for people running Windows CE .NET version 4.2
    • Odyssey for Pocket PC 2003 for people running Windows Mobile 2003
  2. Double-click on the install file.
  3. The Installer will open.
  4. Click Next> on the Welcome screen.
  5. Read the end-user license and click the I accept the terms in the license agreement radio button if you do. Click Next>.
  6. On the Customer Information screen, fill in your User Name:, Organization:; the license key is already filled in; do not click either of the two boxes to the right of the license key. Click Next>.
  7. Click Next> for a Complete installation.
  8. On the Ready to Install the Program screen, click Install.
  9. Wait while the installer installs the Odyssey Configuration Manager program on your personal computer.
  10. It should ask you if you want to install Odyssey on your Pocket PC at this time. Instructions on how to do this are in Pushing Odyssey to Your Pocket PC below.
  11. Click Finish on your personal computer when the installation finishes.

-- Pushing Odyssey to Your Pocket PC

While you're installing the Odyssey client on your Pocket PC, all the windows and actions here, except for the final reboot, take place on your personal computer, not your Pocket PC.

  1. Make sure your Pocket PC is in its cradle, attached to your personal computer.
  2. A window on your personal computer called Add/Remove Programs on your Pocket PC opens and the Installing Applications dialog box will also open asking if you want to install "Odyssey Client for Pocket PC" using the default application install directory. Click Yes.
  3. The Installing Applications dialog will show the progress of the download; it has a Cancel button if you want to cancel the install.
  4. When the download is finished, a dialog box will open on your personal computer telling you to check your Pocket PC to see whether additional steps are needed to complete the installation. Click OK on that dialog box. (Nothing needs to be done on the Pocket PC at this time.)
  5. Now the Odyssey configuration and certificate information are pushed to the device.
  6. The download dialog box is called Odyssey Device Configuration Status; when the download is finished, it says the software and configuration info was pushed to the device successfully and tells you to reboot your device. Click OK on the personal computer to close the dialog box.
  7. Reboot the Pocket PC.

-- Set Up Odyssey

You can set up Odyssey on your Pocket PC, but it will keep interrupting you to ask you to enter your password. So it's easier to do this on your personal computer and download the configuration info.

  1. Odyssey will open on your Pocket PC, and if you touch the screen it will ask for your password, but it won't be time to enter it yet. Touch Cancel to close the password dialog box.
  2. On your personal computer, Start -> Programs -> Odyssey Client for Pocket PC -> Odyssey Client for Pocket PC Configuration Manager.
  3. Click Profiles and then click on UIC-wireless to highlight it, and click Properties.

  4. Very Important: On the User Info tab, for Login name: type your UIC netid in the box. The other defaults -- selecting Permit login using password and prompt for password are correct.

  5. Click OK to return to Profiles.
  6. Click Commands -> Push to Device. If it complains that Odyssey is running on the device and it can't stop it, try rebooting the Pocket PC, putting it back in the cradle, and running Commands -> Push to Device again as soon as the Pocket PC reboots. Pushing the configuration to the Pocket PC will take a while.

After that, your Pocket PC should be ready to connect to UIC Wireless.

Logging In to Odyssey

  1. The Odyssey Client Manager should automatically open whenever you turn on your Pocket PC with your wireless card attached.
  2. Touch your screen; the Odyssey login dialog screen will open.
  3. Write your ACCC password in the Please enter your password: box and touch OK or touch Enter.
  4. Once your wireless connection is open and you've authenticated, Odyssey should take care of your connection for you, including re-authenticating if it times out and moving your connection from one access point to another if you're walking around.

Using Odyssey

Once you've connected and authenticated, Odyssey should do whatever is necessary to keep your connection going, including re-authenticating if your connection times out and moving your connection from one access point to another if you're walking around. So you can pretty much ignore it once you get logged in.

When Odyssey is running, the Odyssey stylized sailboat icon will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the Today screen. It will be blue if you're connected, red if the authentication failed, clear if you haven't tried to connect.
