| Site Licensed Software: Popular Software at Bargain Prices | ||||
|
Having your own personal computer is a big advantage, but paying list price
for software is not. Our site licensed software can restore that advantage
-- if we have what you need, you'll be hard pressed to buy it cheaper,
anywhere. The Computer Center distributes a wide range of microcomputer
software packages for MS-DOS, Windows, OS/2 and Apple Macintosh machines
under UIC and/or University of Illinois site licenses. While the details
vary, when we purchase a site license, we receive a set of master disks
for the software and permission to make some number of copies (often unlimited)
for distribution on campus. We reproduce the disks ourselves, so the software
itself is very inexpensive. We sell the vendor's manuals for the software
at cost; they are usually optional and are often the most expensive part
of the package.
We also provide consulting support for the software, in return for our receiving higher level support from the vendors for our contact people. Software vendors like this because they save on distribution and support costs, both of which benefit us, too. If your budget allows, you can arrange to have Client Services Office staff install the software on your personal computer for its basic installation/repair fee of $35 per hour. (The Network Services Kit, a collection of mail and information handling programs, comes with a special deal on installation; see "The Network Services Kit" in "The Times They Are A-Changin' Part 2".) Some of the software packages can be purchased by individuals and taken home, but most of the software site licenses specify that the software must be used on "University controlled machines." What this actually means depends on the specific site license. Some restrict software's use to machines which are physically on campus; others allow the software's use on any machine which is used by a faculty or staff member to perform University work, regardless of its location. Students may use restricted software on public or departmental personal computers but may not purchase it themselves. Currently, the site licensed software available to any individual member of the UIC community, including students, is:
How about UNIX workstations? While only a few of the individual software packages are available in versions for UNIX workstations, substantial packages of reduced price software are available for SUN, IBM and Digital workstations. If you are interested in participating in a UNIX software agreement, see the above URL, or call the CSO at 413-0003 or send email to consult@uic.edu. |

The ADN Computer Center's support of personal computers and workstations
is not limited to the distribution of software under site licenses. Along
with the Computer Center's Micro Repair Office, the Client Services Office
provides these services to faculty and departments:

| Service Contract for IBM-Compatible Computers | ||||
|
[Sorry, this service is no longer available. -- Ed.] The Computer Center now offers parts and labor service contracts for IBM and popular IBM-compatible personal computers on the UIC campus. The parts replacement warranty is provided by Bell Atlantic, and the labor will be provided by the CSO and the Micro Repair Office. The cost for this optional service contract will be $10 per month per machine. When you have problems with a machine which is covered by the service contract, call the CSO at 413-0003 to arrange for a service call. A Micros staff member will come, determine what the problem is, order the necessary replacement parts under the parts warranty, and return to install the new parts. In most cases, we anticipate that the repairs will be completed within 72 hours. CD-ROM drives and certain other specialized devices can be included in the warranty at additional cost. Contact the CSO for details.Comments are appreciated; send them to |
