New for Dialin-3, Grateful Med, et al: Your Netid and ADN UNIX Password
We've updated way we authenticate people for ADN network services for Dialin-3's TACACS, for the Grateful Med server, and for all future ADN services. In addition to using your CMS userid and password, you can now identify yourself with your netid and your ADN UNIX password. So maybe you won't need that CMS account after all!

Unit Listings (the "Blue Pages") in ph
With our thanks to Publications Services, the 1995 unit listings from the UIC Staff Directory the Blue Pages listing departments and other UIC campus units have been added to the online ph database. That means you can now look up units online as easily as you can look up people. Just use the ph command, on virtually any system, with a word from the unit name as the search target, and you'll retrieve a set of records for matching units. For example, to look up the Math department, you could use: ph mathematics or ph math* (Just math wouldn't do; ph matches whole words.) There are ph clients for almost every type of computer on campus. To look up the Math department, you could:
CMS
Enter ph math* For help, enter help ph
Eudora for MS-Windows and Mac
Ph is in the Windows menu; the Ph server is ns.uic.edu. Type math* in the box and click on the Ph button. Eudora is included in the Windows and Mac Network Services Kits.
UNIX
Enter ph math* For help, enter man ph
UIC World Wide Web and Gopher
In either case, look for Phonebook under "The Campus"; when asked, enter the search keyword math*
DOS
A ph package is available via anonymous FTP at ftp.uic.edu, in the directory /pub/ph/dos (It requires FTP Inc's PC/TCP, which is in the DOS NS Kit.)
As always, for corrections for personal information, faculty or staff should talk to their departmental phonebook contact person. (There's a list of departmental contact people at the beginning of the printed phonebook, or you can call the CSO at 413-0003 and ask them.) Changes in Blue Pages listings, though, should be sent to Publications Services at phonebk@uic.edu (email), or 996-0633 (fax), or m/c 291 (campus mail).

NS Kit Network Services by Telephone
New versions of the Network Services Kits for DOS, Apple Macintoshes, and for PCs with MS-Windows are available that can be used either with direct ADN-ii connections or with the ADN-ii telephone dialup lines. The NS Kit includes a client for POP email, a newsreader for Netnews/Usenet newsgroups, the ADN Datasave disk backup utility, a Web browser, and Grateful Med. There have been several updates and changes in the software in the Kits; it's worthwhile updating your copy now regardless of whether you'll use it by telephone.

There is only one set of installation diskettes for each operating system; you indicate during installation whether you'll be using the dialup lines or a direct ADN-ii connection. The NS Kit is still available for purchase for $15 (diskettes only), or you can have it installed on your desktop or portable machine for $50 (on campus only). Or you can get it free by anonymous FTP; ftp to ftp.uic.edu, login as anonymous, and give your email address as your password. Get the file /pub/nskit/readme.first for further instructions. For general information on the Network Services Kit, see The ADN Computer Center Network Services Kit, or stop by or call the Client Service Office, 2267 SEL, 413-0003.

A new site license: AUTOCAD!

The ADN Computer Center now has a site license that makes AUTOCAD and the other products of Autodesk available at very substantial discounts. (Most are between $200 and $500.) This is a very unusual site license; purchase is through an outside agency, not the Computer Center. For more information call the CSO at 413-0003 or send email to consult@uic.edu, and we will either mail or fax you a list of available components and purchase instructions.

AUTOCAD is not available for purchase by students.
