The ADN Post |

| Welcome to the 1997-1998 academic year! | ||||
Because fall semester always brings with it a flock of new people, we thought we'd take this opportunity to step back a bit and briefly tell you about the types of services we provide and how you (or your colleagues or students)can begin to use them. But if you're an old friend, don't think there's nothing in this issue for you. In particular, check out the list of our services, the two new Web tools, and the new UIC Announce system. And if you haven't opened your ADN UNIX account yet, check out the automatic account creation process we're using these days; it's introduced in Do-It-Yourself Accounts. |

| ADN Novell Accounts | ||||
Do you have "an ADN account"? Well, now you have another one. During summer session, we created an ADN Novell account for everyone who didn't already have one (and unless you have Server Services in your office, you didn't) and who has an active account on any of the larger ADN machines (icarus, tigger, or UICVM). Your ADN Novell account will allow you to use the machines in the ADN public micro labs -- yes, you do have to log in and log out in the labs now. You log in with your netid and tigger, icarus, or UICVM password. (Just like when you're using the Dialin telephone lines.) With your Novell account comes a modest amount of permanent, personal online disk space that you'll be able to use with any machine in any ADN public micro lab; it will be your h: drive. | Bigger, Better, and Safer | ||||
Last year, we replaced tigger -- the UNIX workstation for faculty and staff -- with a bigger, better, faster machine; we've now done the same for the UNIX workstation for students, icarus. Icarus used to be a Sun SPARC server 1000; we've replaced that machine with a new Sun Ultra Enterprise 4000 with 1.5 GB memory and 5 250-MHz CPUs. The new icarus is running exactly the same operating system as the old one did (Solaris 5.2.1). We hope that the only change you'll notice as you begin the new semester is that it's running faster. Like the old tigger before it, we're renaming the old icarus and will be using it to provide server-type services. There have been changes on borg, too. We upgraded its operating system from SPP-UX 4.1 to SPP-UX 4.2, and also moved it to the ATM network. Another ongoing project is to provide backups for a number of our servers. The steps we've taken so far include having redundant domain name servers and a backup TACACS server. (You use TACACS when you log into the Dialin terminal servers.) Return to Contents |

| Dr. Solomon's Cure | ||||
Now there's no excuse for your not regularly checking your desktop machine for viruses. Dr. Solomon's Antivirus is available from the CSO under a site license that covers all UIC faculty, staff, and students, and can be used on work or home machines. The toolkit contains everything you need to detect viruses, repair files, and help prevent virus infection. The manuals, software, and monthly updates are available only on the World Wide Web: http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/antivirus/ Return to Contents |

| Instructional Technology News | ||||
There are a number of news items in the field of instructional technology, and be sure to check out Instructional Technology Services. FirstClass Group ConferencingThe FirstClass group conferencing system is now available. It uses email and bulletin board technologies to enhance communications within a class, by organizing threaded discussions and subconferences. With FirstClass, you can post announcements and answers, submit and collect homework assignments electronically, hold group discussions on the Web, provide timely feedback, give your students a sense of a community, encourage them to collaborate and help themselves, and hold virtual office hours, at anytime, from anywhere on the Internet. For more info, visit the Instructional Technology Lab or see: http://www.uic.edu Return to Contents New Multimedia ClassroomsWork has been completed on six new multimedia classrooms: 250 SES (Science and Engineering South), 304 and 308 BH (Burnham Hall), 316 DH (Douglas Hall), and 134-2 and 134-3 Pharm (College of Pharmacy). That makes a total of 18 multimedia classrooms at UIC, ranging in size from 28 seats to 500 seats! All of the multimedia classrooms have one or more networked computers, a big projection screen, and sound and other multimedia devices. For multimedia classroom availability, contact the Office of Classroom Support (OCS) at (312)996-2751 and (312)353-3640. For information on the available facilities, see: http://www.uic.edu/depts/oaa/ocs/ Return to Contents New Instructional SoftwareThe new software available in the ADN public labs, the multimedia classrooms, and in Server Services includes:
