The ADN Network Services Kit

The Campus Beat
Windows Macs Everyone

The ADN Network Services Kit (NSKit) contains all the software you need to do electronic mail and browse the World Wide Web, as well as the software you'll need to connect to remote computers (such as tigger and icarus), using your personal computer at home or in the office.

There are three versions of the NSKit: for Windows95 and Windows NT, for Windows 3.1 and DOS, and for Apple Macintoshes. You can download the NSKit for free (at the URL given at the end of this article), purchase it from the CSO for $15 (which will be charged to your university account), or we can install it for you for $50 (oncampus machines only).

The software in the NSKit includes:

Adobe Acrobat Reader -- to read PDF (portable document format) formatted files.

ADN/Datasave (for oncampus faculty and staff with ADN-ii connections only) -- to backup or restore your computer's hard disk to the ADN's backup tapes.

Eudora -- to do email on your personal computer without having to log into your ADN account. (You do need to connect to send or receive your email, though).

Netscape -- World Wide Web browser software, which provides easy, point-and-click access to the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Newsreaders -- such as Nuntius and WinVN, to read and post to Netnews/Usenet newsgroups.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and other TCP/IP networking software -- to allow you to transfer files between your personal computer and a remote computer (which may be your UNIX account, an FTP site such as our ftp.uic.edu, as well as any other locations). Some versions of the NSKit include additional networking software that is not provided by the operating system.

And, of course, documentation -- basic instructions on installing and using Kit software.

(Yes, a 386 should work; but it will be slow!)
