Free ADN Seminars for Fall '97

The Campus Beat
Many Everyone

Each semester, the Academic Computing and Communications Center offers a variety of free short courses on computer-related topics. If you are new to our campus or new to computing (or to Web surfing!), you'll find one or several of our seminars useful. As usual, any member of the UIC community may attend any ADN seminar; there's no charge and no registration.

The ADN's seminars are generally held in two locations: room 2249 SEL, 950 South Halsted, and room 179 BGRC, 1940 West Taylor. New for the fall, these rooms (and also rooms 2058 SEL, 2249F SEL, and 2263 SEL) are equipped with ceiling-mounted projectors, which should make it easier to follow the instructor's demonstrations. (These labs may also be reserved for classes; use the form at: http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/pclabs/reserve/ or send email to seminars@uic.edu .)

If you are new to UIC or new to computing, please attend Computer Center Available Services. If you're new to UNIX (icarus or tigger), you might be interested in Basic UNIX, on UNIX files and directories, Basic vi, on the UNIX text editor vi, and Basic pine Email.

If you plan to buy the Network Services Kit, attend Introduction to the Network Services Kit, and you might also find Introduction to Eudora useful. (Eudora is the email program that comes with the Network Services Kit).

If you're interested in the Internet, there's Introduction to the Internet, about World Wide Web browsers such as Netscape, Netnews/Usenet newsgroups, FTP, Telnet, and other Internet tools. Or Introduction to HTML or Web Graphics if you're thinking about publishing on the Web.

There are additional seminars on personal computer operating systems: Windows, Windows95, and the Macintosh, on WordPerfect, and on the statistical software packages SAS and SPSS.

For the date, time, and locations of these seminars, pick up a fall seminar handout in the Client Services Office, room 2267 SEL, or see the ACCC Seminars home page.
