New Dialin Lines and Grim Reaper Rule

New Dialin Lines in Chicago

The ADN Post Everyone

Note: The ACCC dialin lines change continually; for up-to-date info, see URL: http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/network/dialin/

One hundred and twenty-eight new lines in all. Dialin-Express, a set of dialin lines with a 10-minute connect time limit, has been doubled to 32 lines, and there's a new set of 96 dialin lines that are connected to 33.6 Kbps modems. This gives us three sets of 96 lines: 96 14.4 Kbps lines, 96 28.8 Kbps lines, and 96 33.6 Kbps lines. So instead of Dialin-1, Dialin-2, and so on, now we have Hunt Group 1, the 14.4 Kbps lines, Hunt Group 2, the 28.8 Kbps lines, and Hunt Group 3, the new 33.6 Kbps lines. The phone numbers in the table below should connect you to any free line within each group. (You can help us with this by calling the Operations help line at (312)413-8080 to report any lines that appear to be broken. They can take care of the problem, either by fixing it or by busying the line out.)

There is one additional change in the dialin lines that should make it easier for you to get connected -- we've put a 5-hour per call time limit on all the ADN dialin lines. (Except, of course, the Dialin-Express lines, which have a 10-minute connect time limit.) We made this change in response to the growing number of people who would dial in and then remain connected for an excessive period of time -- sometimes for days.

We will continue to monitor and improve our dialin telephone services, but it's impossible for us to add enough lines to meet the ever-increasing demand for them. If getting through the first time, every time is important to you, consider subscribing to a commercial Internet service provider that has a no-busy-signal guarantee and convenient local access telephone numbers. Typical charges for these services are $15 per month, which may be less than your phone charges for using our free service. See "Finding and Selecting a Commercial Internet Service Provider" at http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/inform/docs/isp.html

Time-Based Grim Reaper Rule for Email on Icarus and Tigger

[Note: It's not this way anymore; see Email Space Limits for ACCC Servers. -Ed]

The ADN Post  UNIX Everyone

There's a new Grim Reaper rule for incoming email mailboxes on our UNIX systems, icarus for students and tigger for faculty and staff. We have always said that you should not think of your incoming mailbox as a long-term storage facility; we're now enforcing this on UNIX as we have always done on UICVM CMS. The Grim Reaper is now deleting email that has been left in incoming ADN UNIX mailboxes longer than eight weeks. The UNIX Grim Reaper rules are now:

  • tigger: not larger than 4 MB
  • icarus: not larger than 2 MB
  • both: not older than 8 weeks
Note that mail removed from an icarus or tigger mailbox due to mailbox size is kept for you in UNIX scratch space for no longer than two weeks. There is still no limit on the number of items that you can have in your UNIX mailbox.
