Using the Inform Advanced Search Form

[Sorry, Inform has been retired. But you can still search the ACCC Web documents using the Search box on the lower left of the ACCC Web home page. That search works a lot like the Inform one used to. -- Ed.]

Figure 3: Advanced Search Form

The Advanced Search form offers various search options in the three blue boxes in the white part of the screen; you  may select any combination of them.

For keywords that you type in the "Select Search Words:" box, you can:

    Match any word
    Match All Words
    Match Exact Phrase
and Search for those keywords:
In any field:
look for matches for your keywords in first 1K of text or in the keywords and/or command names assigned in the Inform description of the document or menu.
In keywords:
look for matches only in the keywords and/or command names assigned in the Inform description of the document or menu.
In titles:
search only document's or menu's HTML title, the one displayed as the browser screen's title. (This is not necessarily the same as the item's description in Inform menus.)
If you select item(s) from the scrolling lists of explicit Keywords or Package/Commands (in the two blue boxes on the bottom right of the Advanced Search form), Inform searches only the Inform assigned keywords and package or command names, not the text of the document. In this case, you can use the options below the lists to specify whether you want to Match Any Selection or Match All Selections.

In the gray box, the Advanced Search form offers you options on what and how much to return in each search. First, whether to Return:

    documents and menus (the default)
    documents only, or
    menus only
You can also limit the returned hits to a specific operating system or platform; the default is all operating systems. (Hits is database jargon for an item that matches the specified search criteria.) And finally, you can specify the Max number of hits to return at once. If there are more matches than your selected maximum, the returned hits menu will include a link at the top that you can use to display the next set.

Some notes on using the Advanced Search form:

  • As usual, click on an item in the Keyword or Package/Command list to select it; use Ctrl-Click to select more than one Keyword phrase or Package or Command name at a time.
  • Click the Do Search button to submit your search.
  • Click the Reset button to clear your previous search selections before you conduct another search.
