Configuring Win95 for ADN and Modem

The Head Crash Windows Everyone

Asked on the REACH List:

Hi, REACHers. I have a laptop computer and I want to use it both at home and at work via Win95. When I'm at work, I use an ADN-ii connection. When I'm at home, I use a dialup connection. How do I make Win95 recognize this situation?

Right now, it seems to connect to my LAN at work fine, but if I try to use any NSKit apps, it pops up a "Network Dialup" box for me to dial in instead of using the ADN-ii ethernet protocol. Why is that? What did I do wrong with the Win95 setup?

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Reply: I have a laptop running Windows 95 that I've been using at work and home for the past eight months with no problem. This is what I did to set things up.

First, I installed the ADN NSKit on my machine for the TCP/IP ethernet connection and configured everything on the laptop as if it were a desktop machine. I set up and configured the ethernet card and TCP/IP settings in the Network section in the Control Panel. This way all the ADN applications work fine at work.

Then, for home use, I set up a connection in Dial-up Networking with the appropriate phone numbers. I then configured another setting in Network on the Control Panel, but this time it is for the "Dial-up Adapter", which will control my modem connection. I set up the TCP/IP for the "Dial-up Adapter" to "Obtain an IP address automatically"; otherwise everything else is set up the same as the TCP/IP for my ethernet card.

I even have a third setting under Network, Control Panel for my AOL settings (ALL Dial-up Adapter and ALL TCP/IP), but that doesn't affect either the home or work ADN connections.

To use my ADN applications at home, I just click on my Dialup Networking icon (make sure it is configured to "bring up terminal window after connection") and connect to the UIC servers. Once this connection is made, all the ADN applications run just as if you were connected to the ADN from your office ethernet card.

It sounds like you installed the ADN NSKit for modem use because it is bringing up that dialup screen when you try to use an ADN application. I would suggest deleting your NSKit and installing the NSKit for ADN use, then configuring things as I said above.
