You might be running an SMTP server and not even know it. There are SMTP servers for all these systems; some even come with SMTP servers that are turned on and running as open servers by default. And the sad thing is that, even if you don't know you're running an SMTP server, you can be sure that some day soon some spammer will find out and begin to exploit it!

If you're running an SMTP server that you don't need, turn it off; use ours or your ISP's. If you're running an SMTP server that you really do need, fix it. These Web sites can help:

MAPS has a particularly cogent description of the problem, and links to fixes for a vast array of SMTP servers. ORBS says that some of MAPS's repair information is out of date, so visit ORBS before you begin fixing your server.

If you don't close your open relay now, you will hear from MAPS, ORBS, or the SpamCop (http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/1.html) later.
