New Site-Licensed Software

The ACCC has site licenses for two new software titles for Windows that you might be interested in: Active@ Eraser and Zone Lab's Integrity DeskTop. Both are only available to faculty and staff, and there are links to both in the e-sales main menu.

Active@ Eraser is a secure file eraser, Internet and local activities cleaner, hard drive eraser, and disk wiper. When you delete a file in Windows, it does not actually erase your data, it just deletes the pointer to your data. This can be a good thing, because it allows you to get data back you erased by accident, but it can also be a bad thing, because it allows other people to get your data back. Active@ Eraser completely destroys all the data that you want destroyed.

You can also use Active@ Eraser to erase the tracks of your Internet activity and local actions on your PC, so that no one else can see where you've been or what you've been doing.

For more information, see: http://www.active-eraser.com/

And there's also a disk scrubber for Macs: SuperScrubber

SuperScrubber is a disk utility that serves to completely and permanently erase all data from a specified internal or external hard drive or partition on Apple Mac G3s, G4s, and G5s (the actual types of Macs included are listed on the SuperScrubber Web site), leaving no retrievable trace of the old data.

For more information, see: http://www.jiiva.com/superscrubber/information/

Zone Lab's Integrity Desktop is the enterprise version of its well respected and easy to set up ZoneAlarm personal software firewall.

Integrity is pretty much as easy to set up as ZoneAlarm and has a lot of additional features that ZoneAlarm doesn't, including email attachment protection and Web privacy features, which control Web cookies, Web bugs, banner ads, pop-up and pop-under ads, animations, and whatever types of active code you want blocked (javascript, vbscript, java, ActiveX, and so on).
