What is a Netid? An Enterprise
ID?
|
| |
Each individual at the University of Illinois has a unique identity. Student application
records are maintained centrally within UI-Integrate (UI Enterprise system) and distributed
to the appropriate campus computing centers once admission is offered.
At UIC, the Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) generates a netid when those
records are received. A netid ("net ID") is a multipurpose unique identifier
associated with each student, faculty member, or staff and once activated, is used for
campus-based computing services. The list of services is long, and includes email, wireless,
and public lab access. Browse ACCC services
on this page
or visit ACCC's home page for service details.
An Enterprise ID (EID) is used for accessing administrative computing services, e.g., course registration.
These services are centralized and accessed by all affiliates of the three University of Illinois
campuses. The EID is claimed as the last part of Netid Activation.
If you experience any difficulty establishing
your netid or EID, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions
section, repeating activation if appropriate. Still no luck? Follow the reporting
instructions at the end of the document.
The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) provides campus-based
computing services to the UIC campus. Your netid must be activated before
using those services. UIC and U of I Services associated with your netid and EID will be
covered in detail during new student orientation.

What Do I Need to Activate my Netid?
|
| |
Netid Activation is a multi-step process. Before you begin, be prepared to provide this information:
- Social Security Number
- Alternatively, use the TCN (temporary control number) if you do not
have an SSN or if you opted to not provide it on your application form.
You'll find the TCN printed on the Acceptance letter sent by the Office
of Admissions and Records (OAR).
- UIN
- Labeled Applicant ID at the top left corner of the Admissions
letter you were sent. It is 9 digits long. This is your UIN.
(It will also appear on your photo ID card.)
- Birth Date
- Entered in the form MMDDYYYY; for example: 06101988
- A password
- A secure password protects you - your identity, your
computer records and email, your integrity. Read
Choosing a Safe Password before the Netid Activation page asks you for your password.
- Emergency
Password Rescue Mechanisms. If you ever forget your password,
you can use one of these self-service tools to change it.
- Challenge/Response - register a question/answer pair that only you can answer. (This is required by Netid Activation.)
- Emergency Email Address - register a secure, non-UIC email account. Don't remember your password? Use this utility and have password changing
instructions sent to this account. (Optional in Netid Activation, but highly recommended!
Establish a free Web-based email account at Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. before
starting Netid Activation.)

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
|
| |
For a better understanding of the issues related to Netid Activation,
review this FAQ before reporting problems. Whenever appropriate, try
activation a second time. ACCC contact information is found at the end of this document.
- Netid activation reports "UIN not found" even though
I typed it in as it appears on my admissions letter.
- Activation will fail if the UIN is missing from ACCC records. Contact us.
The data will be added and you will be invited to try activation again.
- Why does Netid Activation reject my SSN?
- If you do not have a Social Security Number or if you opted to not include
an SSN when applying to UIC, you were assigned a TCN (temporary control number)
and can find it on your admissions letter. In these cases, ACCC records reflect
the TCN, not your SSN. Try activation again, substituting your TCN.
- What do I use if I don't have a Social Security Number?
- See above.
- I'm a transfer student from UIUC or UIS. I know I already have
an Enterprise ID. What about a netid?
- If you were in attendance at UIUC or UIS since academic year 2004-05,
then you already have an EID. A UIC campus netid will be created for you during Netid Activation
so you can use UIC computing resources. If that process fails, include
your prior relationship with UI in the details when you contact us.
- I am a returning student, having taken a leave of absence.
I recall having a netid. Will I get it back?
- Depending on when you were a registered student, there's a good chance your
netid will be renewed and an Enterprise ID will be created for you.
- Netid activation indicates "missing or wrong data",
although I know I entered everything correctly.
- ACCC data may be wrong, or data elements may be missing. Our records
are updated via UI-Integrate/Banner. Contact us and we will work with other departments to make sure
your records are corrected. Note: this may require that you visit the Office of
Registration and Records (1200 SSB, 1200 W. Harrison) if your online application records are in error and no
hardcopy documentation exists to confirm.
- I can successfully login to the Enterprise, but it appears I don't have full access to all the functions. When will this happen?
- Services associated with your Enterprise ID will be reviewed at
Orientation, at which time you'll register for classes. For those
students not attending an Orientation, please contact your College
office if you have difficulty accessing course registration functions.

Reporting Problems with Netid Activation
|
| |
To expedite the resolution of any problems, we must have the following information:
- Your complete name - as it was specified on
your application forms to UIC. We must be able to uniquely identify you from
the other 75,000 students at the University of Illinois!
- UIN - If you have multiple UINs, report all,
and if possible, dates of use. (Check your admissions letter for UIN, also called "Applicant ID".)
- SSN/TCN - Social Security Number and/or TCN (temporary control number) from your admissions letter
- Admission term - Fall, 2007
- If previously affiliated with the University of Illinois, indicate which
campus (UIC, UIUC, UIS) and the terms of attendance.
- A description of the problem, as best you can assess from error messages
and FAQ review.
- A non-UIC email address where we can contact
you with follow-up questions and/or information.
