Netids and Passwords
|
| |
Your Password? Your Responsibility!
ACCC does not change passwords over the phone or by email.
- Make it a strong, secure password - no one must guess it!
- Create recovery tools
- Forget password? Use recovery tools to change/reset it
- ACCC requires an in-person visit for password changes
|
Each person is unique. Every person at the University of Illinois gets a unique username.
The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) maintains these usernames at UIC. Here, this username is called a netid.
A netid ("net ID") is a multipurpose unique identifier associated with each student, faculty member, or staff.
This username remains the same for each person on any University of Illinois campus. At UIC, people new to the University of Illinois
are given netids when they are added to the ACCC Phonebook. For new students, this netid is automatically generated once they are offered
admissions.
This netid is the username for many services, including email, internet access on the UIC network, and using computers in ACCC computer
labs. Most UIC websites that require a username and password will use the ACCC netid and Common Password. You will use these frequently.
There is another username, the Enterprise ID, and password, the Enterprise Password, which most members of UIC will also receive. The
Enterprise ID will be the same as your UIC netid, but the password is independent.
If you experience any difficulty establishing your netid, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section. Still no luck? Follow
the reporting instructions at the end of the document.
The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) provides campus-based computing services to the UIC campus. Your netid must
be activated before using those services, including accessing UIC Connect.

What Do I Need to Activate my Netid?
|
| |
Before You Begin...
Make sure you have:
- SSN
- UIN
- Birthdate
- Password
- Password Recovery Mechanisms
|
Netid Activation is a multi-step process. Before you begin, be
prepared to provide this information:
- Social Security Number (SSN) or Temporary
Control Number (TCN)
If you did not provide an SSN to the University, you were issued a TCN
instead. Your TCN is printed on the Admission Letter sent by the Office
of Admissions and Records (OAR).
- University ID Number (UIN)
Your UIN is 9 digits long. It is also
printed on the Admission Letter, labeled Applicant ID.
(It will also be on your photo ID card, called an ICard.)
- Birth Date
Entered in the format MMDDYYYY; for example: 06101988
- A password
A secure password protects you
- your identity, your computer records and email, your integrity. Read Choosing a Safe Password before
you activate your netid.
-
Password Recovery Mechanisms. The ACCC does not change
passwords over the phone or by email. If you ever forget
your password, you can use one of these self-service tools to change it:
- Challenge/Response
- create a question/answer pair that only you
can answer. (Required during Netid
Activation)
- Emergency Email Address - register a secure, non-UIC email
account. (Optional during Netid Activation, but highly recommended!)

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
|
| |
For a better understanding of the issues related to Netid Activation, review this FAQ before reporting problems. Read the FAQ, then try netid activation again. ACCC contact information is found at the end of this document, in case you still have problems with netid activation.
- "ERROR: Your UIN was not found.": I get this error when I try to activate my netid, even though I typed it in as it appears on my admissions letter.
- Activation will fail if the UIN is missing from ACCC records. Contact us. The data will be added and you will be invited to try activation again.
- “ERROR: No such ssn found.": I get this error when I try to activate my netid.
- If you do not include an SSN when applying to UIC, you were assigned a Temporary Control Number (TCN). In these cases, ACCC records reflect the TCN, not your SSN. If you are a student, your TCN is on your Admission Letter from OAR. If you are an employee, it may be found on a letter from HR or OIS. Try activation again, substituting your TCN.
- What do I use if I don't have a Social Security Number?
- See above.
- "ERROR: The id card number you entered was incorrect, please check it and try again.": I get this error when I try to activate my netid, even though I know I entered everything correctly.
- ACCC data may be wrong, or parts may be missing. Contact us and we will work with other departments correct your records.
- I was a student or employee at UIUC or UIS. I already have an Enterprise ID (EID). What about a netid?
- If you were at UIUC or UIS since academic year 2004-05, then you already have an EID. Your UIC netid will match your EID. If you have problems with netid activation, mention your prior relationship with University of Illinois when you contact us.
- I am a returning student. I recall having a netid. Will I get it back?
- Depending on when you were last a registered student, there's a good chance your netid will be renewed. Otherwise, a new one will be given to you.
- I have a question about my Enterprise ID.
- Please see Web for Student, if you are a student, or Web for Faculty, if you are not a student. Contact AITS for questions about use of those applications.

Reporting Problems with Netid Activation
|
| |
To expedite the resolution of any problems, we must have the following information:
- Your complete name - as it was specified on
your application forms to UIC. We must be able to uniquely identify you from
the other 75,000 students at the University of Illinois!
- A non-UIC email address where we can contact
you with follow-up questions and/or information.
- UIN - If you have more than one UIN (this needs to be fixed), report all,
and if possible, dates of use. (Check your Admission Letter for your "Applicant ID". This is a UIN.)
- Admission term - Summer 2007 or Fall 2007
- If previously affiliated with the University of Illinois, indicate which
campus (UIC, UIUC, UIS) and the terms of attendance.
- A description of the problem, including the exact error messages you see.
