UIConnect Login Requires an Activated Netid

You've been invited to use UIConnect. For students curious about the many related details, links follow at the end of this document. But first, a brief look at computing services and passwords.

Responsibility for Password Maintenance Rests with Users

Most UIC-based campus computing services require secure or authenticated access via your netid and common password. These services include email, public lab access (including printing), wireless, Res-Net, and software purchases. Most can be used following netid activation. Other services may be restricted until ACCC can process Fall 2007 registration status.

The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) at UIC supports these campus-based computing services. ACCC provides self-service tools for users to manage their own password changes (or recovery, in the event of a forgotten password). If the self-service recovery effort fails, a user must see ACCC personnel in-person for a password change, upon presentation of valid picture identification.

Students admitted for Fall, 2007 are no exception. You're invited to use UIConnect to track admissions components tailored to your application and needs. Your application is confidential; access to UIConnect (and any other secure web page or application) is limited to those individuals who know your netid and password. Your netid is public and searchable in the campus phonebook, but the common password associated with your netid should be known to you and you alone. We can't emphasize how important it is for you to establish useful password recovery tools..

Netid Activation Overview

The netid activation process will make your netid known to you, prompt for a password that meets several strength rules, require you to define at least one password recovery mechanism (for use later, via self-service) and establish either an email account or set email routing.

We make available a Netid Activation Overview document and encourage a read of that. It contains two key sections that you may need should you run into trouble:

Netid activation requires you provide the following:

  1. Social Security Number or TCN - If you did not provide an SSN in your application to the University of Illinois, you were issued a Temporary Control Number (TCN). Use this TCN in place of an SSN during netid activation. You'll find the TCN on your Admissions letter, [small rollover image/small popup?].
  2. UIN - The UIN is located on your Admissions letter [small rollover image/small popup?] and is labeled as the Applicant ID.
  3. Date of Birth - you will enter in the format MMDDYYYY, e.g., 08251989
  4. Status - check Student
  5. You'll select your initial password. Consider reading ACCC Passwords .
  6. Password recovery tools are established, allowing for self-service management of your password after activation. Read all the details in Setting Emergency Password Rescue Mechanisms .
    • Create a Challenge Question and Response - a secret question only you can answer!
This is a required component of netid activation and one you may be very dependent on. Make it a good one!
    • Provide a non-UIC email address as your Emergency Email address.
If you don't have your own email address already, consider establishing an email account with one of the many providers available before proceeding with activation. Check with friends for recommendations; consider gmail.com , hotmail.com or yahoo.com .

In Conclusion

Do not share any passwords, for email or otherwise, with anyone. A cleverly-defined Challenge/Response and well-guarded passwords are your safeguards to maintaining self-service convenience for managing your own common password. You will use this password for several months before arriving at UIC. Be sure you can reset it yourself so you can actively participate in UIConnect!

Before leaving these pages, take time to bookmark the Password Changing Utility . Should you need it, you can find it readily! (We also recommend that you practice using it before you really need it.)
