Usage Policy for UIC Wireless and Res-Net Networks |
||
| Terms of Use | ||
|
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is committed to being a good network neighbor on the Internet. All computers connected to the UIC wireless or Res-Net networks are using UIC's network for access and are expected to abide by the following rules in order to continue receiving network access. The use of the UIC wireless networks anywhere on campus or the Res-Net network in the residence halls is a privilege and not a right and shall be consistent with the UIC Computer Use Policies. Failure to comply with the following policy statements will result in a minimum of the loss of your network connection. In addition, action for noncompliance may be taken with Student Judicial Affairs as well as any pertinent law enforcement agency. You are responsible for all actions performed from your computer that is connected to the Res-Net or the UIC wireless networks. Granting access to others to use your computer for network access is prohibited. You are expected to take all reasonable security precautions to ensure that others do not use your computer for abusive or illegal purposes. If your computer is identified as being used for such behavior, access will be revoked. The use of your Internet connection for non-University related activities including but not limited to income-producing or other business activities is not allowed. You may not run servers on your Res-Net or UIC wireless-connected computer with the intention of having other people accessing the servers. This includes, but is not limited to FTP, telnet, peer-to-peer, and mail servers as well as all others. Servers such as HTTP, IRC, DNS, and others are specifically prohibited. Use of your UIC Internet connection for the following unlawful and/or unethical activities will be considered to be a severe transgression and dealt with accordingly:
There is a 4GB upload/download data transfer limit per 24-hour period, starting at midnight of each day, on all your traffice on Res-Net and the UIC wireless network connection, combined. Starting in Fall Semester, the first time in each academic year that you exceed the limit of 4GB, you will be sent a warning email. After that warning email -- only one per year -- each subsequent time that you exceed the bandwidth limit, your account will be suspended for a period determined based on the number of times that you have exceed the bandwidth limit during the current semester, according to the following schedule:
Suspension means that the Internet access for all personal systems (e.g., laptops, desktops, smartphones, and PDAs) owned by you will be cut off on campus for that number of days. Your use of Res-Net or the UIC wireless networks means that you understand and agree to abide by the above policy statement in order to continue receiving network access. |

| Bandwidth Monitoring and Your Current Bandwidth Usage | ||
|
The ACCC uses data from the network routers to monitor bandwidth usage on the UIC wireless and Res-Net networks for all machines on campus. This is the data that all Res-Net or the UIC wireless networks warnings and suspensions are based on. The ACCC does not include traffic on your local network, traffic to/from other UIC computers, or traffic to/from the Urbana in its bandwidth calculations. You can use the link below to view your bandwidth usage as calculated by the ACCC. This is the official method for monitoring your bandwidth. Please note that although the ACCC makes every effort to maintain the availability of its machines, the inability to access the link below is not a valid reason for exceeding your bandwidth quota: View my bandwidth usage (requires Bluestem login) This Web tool has two other handy functions:
Also please note that there may be a delay of as much as 15 minutes between the usage reported on the Current Bandwidth Web page and your actual current usage. In other words, if you have downloaded or uploaded anything in the last 15 minutes, it may not be reflected in the total on the Web page because that data may not have been processed yet. Finally, depending on what the network protocols you are using, file transfers (specifically, those using the TCP protocol) may not appear in your total until they finish. This means that if you use a protocol like SFTP to transfer a 500MB file and it took 35 minutes to transfer, then that 500MB would not be added to your total until it was done transferring.
