Surfing the Web

Configuring Netscape

There are several things you should take note of in the Preferences section of the Edit menu. The items shown below are useful for controlling your Start page in Netscape, clearing locations, setting up for email, and saving disk space.

NAVIGATOR SECTION

You can use this section to indicate what Netscape should display on startup, the page that the Home button will go to, and the opportunity to clear all information in the History storage and in the Location bar.

FONTS

You have the ability to control the types of fonts that will display on the screen. You can also option to show the fonts that were chosen for the page by its author.

MAIL

In order to click on an email link on a Web page and have it access your email, you must set up an email address and an email server. The settings shown in the picture here are what should be listed for the Identity and Servers section, respectively, under the Mail and Newsgroups section.

ADVANCED

It is recommended to check the "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" sections, along with the "Enable Style Sheets" check box, as many Web pages use these items for more sophisticated graphics and programs. Cookies are short programs that are stored on your computer by Web sites to gather information about you. These are used primarily by retail sites. It is recommended you click on the seocnd option: "Accept only cookies that get send back to the originating server". This will prevent your information from going to an unknown site.

CACHE

Under the Advanced section, you can clear the Memory Cache and the Disk Cache, which store pages for quicker referencing later. Clearing these can free up disk space.
