Surfing the Web

Search Engines

One of the most important things to do on the Web is to search for other Web pages. There are several Search Engines that are Websites designed to help you find what you want. Some of the recommendations:

  • <www.yahoo.com> - Most popular search engine with users. Includes categories of pages and other items such as chat, bulletin boards, movie and TV listings, news, and fantasy sports leagues

  • <www.lycos.com> - Popular search engine, similar to Yahoo!

  • <www.google.com> - Very fast search engine, designed to actively find sites, often within a fraction of a second

  • <www.iwon.com> - Search engine similar to Yahoo! with surging popularity because of the ability to win cash and prizes

When you use any search engine, you can type in what it is you are looking for. If you simply type in the item in question, each search engine will look for all or any of those words on a Website, listing the sites first where all words are contained.

By modifying what you type into the search box, you can alter the search.

Will search for the exact phrase
Will search for sites with both first and second word
Will search for sites with the first word but NOT the second
Will search for sites containing words starting with those letters
