Uploading Files

Once you have created your pages, you must upload them to a Web server so they may be viewed by others. Current UIC students, faculty, and staff are granted a certain amount of Web space on the UIC servers for their personal Web pages and other personal files. (Students are granted 10 MB of space, faculty and staff receive 20 MB.) Separate areas and capacities are used for class sites, department sites, and student organization sites.

The Site Window (accessible under the Window menu or by hitting [F8]) allows you to set up your local files into folders and organize the files and folders of a remote Web site.

You begin the setup to access your remote site by going to the Site|New Site menu.

Site Definition for your Local Info

You should start by setting up your local info. You give your site definition a name and point to the local root folder where your pages are stored. Once completed, you can click in the Web Server Info category and set up the connection to the Web server.

Site Definition for your Web Server, where you include your FTP host, host directory, login, and password

After choosing FTP for the Server Access, you must now fill in the FTP host, the directory on the server, your login ID and password. The data to be filled in will be dependent on what types of pages you are uploading. (Personal, class, department, or student organization.) Consult the following table.

PERSONAL USE

Students

  • FTP host is icarus.cc.uic.edu
  • As Host Directory, type public_html (this will by default be in your personal home directory)

Faculty and Staff:

  • FTP host is tigger.cc.uic.edu
  • As Host Directory, type public_html (this will, by default, be in your personal home directory)
CLASSES
  • FTP host is tigger.cc.uic.edu
  • Host Directory is /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/classes/subject/rubric
    (for example .../classes/math/math101)
DEPARTMENTS
  • FTP host is tigger.cc.uic.edu
  • Host Directory is /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/depts/department
    (for example .../depts/accc)
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
  • FTP host is icarus.cc.uic.edu
  • Host Directory is /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/stud_orgs/type/name
    (for example .../stud_orgs/sports/rugby

In all four cases, you would then type in your login ID and password. (If you are at a shared computer, you may wish to uncheck the Save option under password. This will prevent others from uploading to your site.) Click on the OK button, then the Done button when returned to the list of sites.

You are now ready to upload your files. Click the Connect button next to the name of your site and you will be connected to the Web server. <Click here to see a video demonstration of a file being uploaded. (2.2MB)>

PLEASE NOTE: if you are uploading files for personal use, you must upload them into the public_html directory in your home directory. More information about this can be found in our <Web Publishing at UIC> seminar materials. <You can also click here for a handout regarding publishing to UIC Web servers.>
