Linking Files in Excel

Sometimes the data we require is in another file. Linking a cell to another cell in another file is a very simple process. In the cell where the link will go, type an equals sign (=) since it is a formula, then simply click on the cell in the other file. Excel does the rest. (It's best to have both files open to make the link simple. Using the Window menu switches you from one workbook to the other.)

As an example, we'll used a workbook called linkedfile.xls, which contains a number in cell B2. On our original sheet, we've placed a section that calls for that number.

Here's what the formula looks like when we link the two files.

The name of the file shows in brackets, followed by the name of the sheet in the file, then a ! separates the sheet name from the cell. Here's the final result.
