Getting Started

Creating a New Presentation

When you first start PowerPoint, the computer will ask you if you wish to create a new presentation, or open an existing presentation.

Dialog box at startup-you can create a new file with the AutoContent Wizard, pick a design template, or open an existing file

  • AutoContent Wizard-There are several presentations created inside of PowerPoint. Each of them is designed around a certain type of presentation. You merely have to pick the presentation that matches your own and fill in the specifics to make the presentation yours.
  • Template-Every presentation has a background of colors and images. You can pick the template that suits you best. These templates can be modified for individual presentations
  • Blank Presentation-The computer will not put in any pre-made text or background templates. You will insert these yourself at a later point.

If you select the Template Option, you are given several choices of the backgrounds shapes, styles, and colors for your presentation.

Available PowerPoint Design Templates

By clicking on one the templates listed, a preview of that template appears at the right side of the dialog box. Once a template has been chosen, the computer will prompt you for an AutoLayout.

Choose an AutoLayout for your slide

The slide is organized into one of many ways. Generally, presentations start with the Title Page, which allows you to enter a title and subtitle for your presentation. Other AutoLayouts can give bulleted lists, tables, charts, organizational charts, graphics, multimedia files, or any combination of these. There are also AutoLayouts which give you a blank screen where you can type just a title or nothing at all.
