  • The image in the top left is the original saved once with low compression.
  • The two next to it were saved with medium and high compression respectively.
  • The second row is the result of saving the images in the first row again with the same respective amounts of compression.
  • Likewise, the images in the third row were opened up again and saved with their respective compression settings.
  • The loss of quality resulting from repeated saves with different levels of compression is due to the fact that JPEG compression removes colors that are redundant, or not noticeable in the image when viewed normally.
  • In general, JPEG files can be resaved once or twice without objectionable pixelation - however it is always best to keep original files saved as BMP, TIFF or PICT files, which have no lossy compression.
