Transferring
Files
As stated
in the Software section, the different Web authoring programs
have the capability to transfer your Web pages from your local
drive to the Web server. <Click
here to see the process done in Macromedia Dreamweaver.>
There is also a program called WS_FTP. It is part of the Network
Services Kit, and it allows you to transfer files between
your local drive and the servers. Some of the information
on this page will make it much easier for you to transfer
files.
Setting
up a Profile
To make
things easier for yourself, you should set up a profile in
WS_FTP. You can use the profile to set up your local directory,
the location on the server where files should go, and store
this information for use the next time. When WS_FTP opens,
you will get a screen similar to this:

This is
one example of a profile. You click the New button to create
a new profile. You give the profile a name and type in the
correct Web server in the Host Name/Address box. (tigger.cc.uic.edu
or icarus.cc.uic.edu) There are also boxes to enter your UserID
and password. (You can even click the check box at the right
to save the password.)
At this
point, you should then click on the Startup tab and enter
the directories for your remote site and for your local folder.
The following example shows what to type in for a personal
directory:

The Initial
Remote Host Directory is the directory on the server. Please
see the following for more information:
| A
personal directory looks similar to the one on the right.
To determine your path, log in to icarus or tigger and
type the command pwd. |
 |
| For
a class, type in the following. CLASS is the name of the
class (actg, math, eecs, etc.) and RUBRIC is the course
name and number. (actg101, math221, eecs300, etc.) |
 |
| This
is the path for a department. In the case of both departments
and classes, you receive this information when you request
the space. |
 |
Once you
have set up your profile, you can then transfer files between
the two directories by clicking on the files you want and
clicking the proper arrow between the two directory lists.

Use the
ChgDir button if you need to change the directory for either
the local site or the remote site. <Click
