Fields, Headers, and Footers

Headers and Footers

Headers and footers are placed in the margin at the top and bottom of each page in your document. You can insert file names, authors, document updates, or page numbers in a header or footer. To access the header and footer for a page, choose Header and Footer from the View menu.

The main document is grayed out, and the computer gives you the Header and Footer toolbar to assist you. You can place text and graphics in the header (or footer) at the left, center, or right side. At the left side of the Header and Footer toolbar are several pre-made text strings under the Insert AutoText button.

We'll insert the Page X of Y AutoText entry into the header. Here is the result.

Other buttons on the toolbar will insert the current page number, total number of pages, and the current date and time. You can also set a header or footer to be the same as the previous header or footer. This can become handy if you need to make different headers and footers in your document.

To switch between the header and the footer, use this button. We will use the Switch Between Header and Footer button to add some items to the footer. We will put the author's name on the left side, the current page number in the center, and the current date at the right.
