Installing and Configuring ADSM TSM Backup Software

Question 1.1 I have a multi-user Mac. Is there anything special I have to do?

  • The old way:
    • The instructions on how to configure TSM so that non-administrators can manage their own data is in the TSM HTML Manual that comes with the TSM installation.
    • Click on the Mac OS X Applications folder, then click on the Tivoli Storage Manager icon.
    • In the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, double-click on TSM HTML Manual.
    • Click on Installing Tivoli Storage Manager in the Table of Contents in the blue frame on the left.
    • Scroll down to the bottom of this section in the right frame; the instructions are in the section titled, Enabling non-administrators to manage their own data (required system administrator task).
    • I didn't do it, but I checked it and mine was set up like it says anyway.
  • The new way: The system administrator must set Passwordaccess to generate and must use TSM to generate a password file. This is already part of the setup instructions, which might explain why it worked for me.

Question 1.2 I'm using ADSM witn MAC OS X's Case Sensitive HFS+ file system; anything special I need to do?

  • If you are using Apple MacOS X 10.3 and higher new optional Case Sensitive HFS+ file system with the IBM TSM (ADSM) Mac client, you should read this flash from Tivoli support at IBM.
  • The "latest" version on our FTP site at: ftp://ftp.uic.edu/pub/adsm_clients/clients/mac/osx/latest is now newer than the version 5.2.0.3 mentioned in the IBM Flash below.
  • The client needs a writable error log. If a log isn't present, it will be opened under the name and permissions of the user who invokes the applications. It may mean that the user won't have permission and it won't run.
  • It is strongly recommended that you create any required logs (a) in a directory and (b) with proper permissions to allow all users on your Mac write access.

Customers using Apple MacOS X 10.3 (Panther)'s new optional Case Sensitive HFS+ file system with the IBM TSM Mac client should read this flash

Abstract

Apple MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) customers using the new optional Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem with the IBM TSM Mac client need to apply interim fix 5.2.0.3, and ensure the new CS HFS+ volume does not have the same name as existing TSM volumes on the node.

Content

Immediate Action needed:

If planning to use the new MacOS X 10.3 optional Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem, before backing up any files in that filesystem:

- Apply interim fix 5.2.0.3 (or later deliverables such as the 5.2.2 maintenance when available)

- Ensure the new Case Sensitive HFS+ volume does not have the same name as existing TSM volumes for the node. Either the TSM volumes can be renamed on the TSM server, or the CS HFS+ volume can be renamed locally.

Customers using the default HFS+ or other filesystem with MacOS X 10.3 do not need to do anything.

Problem Description:

The new optional Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem in MacOS X 10.3 is case sensitive, not case-preserving like previous Mac filesystems. The existing TSM Mac clients do not treat file names in a case sensitive manner on backup or restore.

With the new filesystem, if two files have the same path and the same name, but different casing on the name, the existing TSM Mac clients will not be able to distinguish between the two files on backup and restore. Both files will be backed up on the very first incremental backup, but both will be treated as the same file, so the backup of the first file will become the inactive version, and the second file will become the active backup version.

On the next incremental, the file that is the inactive version won't be found and will be backed up, becoming the new active version, and the second file's backup will become the inactive version.

This problem only occurs with the new Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem and MacOS X 10.3.

This problem is described in APAR IC37907, and is fixed in TSM Mac client interim fix 5.2.0.3 and subsequent V5.2 deliverables. The interim fix client will recognize the Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem type, and will treat its files in a case sensitive manner on backup and restore. The volume name for the new Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem must be a unique TSM volume name for that node, to ensure correct backup and restore operations.

Recommended Action:

Before backing up any files in a Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem:

1. Install the TSM Mac client interim fix 5.2.0.3 or a later V5.2 deliverable.

2. If the Case Sensitive HFS+ filesystem volume is the same name as an existing TSM volume, either rename that existing TSM volume or rename the new CS HFS+ volume, to prevent case sensitive files from being mixed with case preserving files.

Question 1.3 How do I un-install TSM?

Move the following folders to the trash; you may not have all of the items, depending on which version of the TSM client you are uninstalling:
  1. /Applications/Tivoli Storage Manager
  2. /Library/Application Support/tivoli
  3. /Library/StartupItem/dsmcad
  4. If you wish, /Library/Logs/tivoli
  5. If you wish, ~/Library/Logs/tivoli
  6. If you wish, /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager
  7. If you wish, ~/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager
Remove the following symbolic links:
  1. /usr/bin/dsmc
  2. /usr/bin/dsmtca
  3. /usr/bin/dsmcad
  4. /usr/bin/dsmadmc
  5. /usr/bin/dsmtrace
  6. /usr/bin/dsmagent
  7. /usr/lib/libxmlutil-5.5.0.0.dylib
  8. /usr/lib/libtsm550xerces-c1_6_0.dylib|
If you wish, move the following receipts to the trash:
  1. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaClientCommon.pkg
  2. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaDsmadmc.pkg
  3. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaDsmc.pkg
  4. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaHelpCat.pkg
  5. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaIcc.pkg
  6. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaJavaBundle.pkg
  7. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaJavaCommon.pkg
  8. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaJavaGui.pkg
  9. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaSmp.pkg
  10. /Library/Receipts/TsmBaWebApplet.pkg

Running ADSM TSM Backup Software

Question 2.1 When I try to open the TSM client, the splash screen flashes but nothing else happens. What can I do?

  • This will happen when there is a problem with your configuration files.
  • Use Finder to go to /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager (or /User/Library/...)
  • Control-click on TSM System Preferences or tsm.sys and open it with TextEdit.app.
  • Now find the problem with the preferences. If you modified the Include/Exclude statments, it's likely that the problem is an unmatched quotation mark in them.
  • Fix the problem, and make sure when you save the file it's still a plain text file.
  • Try TSM again.

Question 2.2 When the scheduler tried to run TSM I got PASSWORDACCESS communications failure error messages. What did I do wrong?

  • If you got error messages like:
11/07/2005 13:55:12 ANS1835E PASSWORDACCESS is GENERATE, but password needed for server 'ADSM'.
Either the password is not stored locally, or it was changed at the server.
  • You didn't properly initiate Password Generate.
  • Change your ADSM password using the ACCC password changing utility, http://passwords.accc.uic.edu/
Do not change your ACCC Common password. Click the: "Click here to change your ADSM password." link on the bottom right to change your ADSM password.
  • Then log into TSM for Administrators with your new ADSM password, then quit TSM.
  • Just logging into TSM for administrators resets Password Generate and should take care of that error message. (It's a fatal error message.)
