ADSM/Tivoli Storage Manager Backup Version 3.1 for the Macintosh
|
| |
|
Note January 17, 2003: ADSM has completely
changed, including its name -- it's now Tivoli Storage Manager. This ADSM
installation information is for the previous system, which you still use for Mac OS Classic.
The information in the page does not apply to Macs running MacOSX.
If you are eligible, you can still install TSM or upgrade your current
installation.
Only faculty and staff are eligible to use TSM; only one personal workstation
per person, and that workstation has to be on the UIC campus. You must
use a newer copy of Netscape or Internet Explorer when you register for
TSM.
|
This client works with: System 7.x, MacOS 8.0, MacOS 8.1, MacOS 8.5.x, and MacOS 9
There are two kinds of programmers: those who have lost data, and those
who will.
Use ADSM to backup your personal computer over the network, unattended. Retrieve
files you inadvertently erase or recover from hard disk failure. Do this before
you lose files!
Note: You may find it useful to print a copy of this page for reference.
The six-step procedure in this document will register your machine with our
new ADSM server, create a completely new backup of your files, and schedule
your machine for regular automatic backups.

0. Decide if You're Eligible and Open Your ACCC Account
|
| |
The introductory document in this site explains who may use the ACCC's ADSM
service and what machines they can use it on. (Machine, actually. Only one machine
per customer.) Click the Intro: What It Is and Who
Can Use It link above to see whether you're eligible.
You must be a current UIC faculty or staff member and have a UIC account that
allows you to authenticate with Bluestem to use ADSM. If you do not yet have
an account, you can obtain one now.
Click here to open your ACCC account.

1. Download the New ADSM Client
|
| |
Click on the link below to cause a download of the new ADSM client to your Mac.
Click
here to download ADSM Backup Software client NOW.
Your browser should automatically download the file and expand it. When completed, you should find a new ADSM Installer icon on your desktop. If it can not be found there, use Finder to locate ADSM Installer.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
2. Install the New ADSM Client
|
| |
- Double click on the new ADSM Installer icon to start the installation.
- Press continue when you see the ADSM logo screen.
- Read the displayed Read Me text for any additional information, then press
Continue
- You'll be asked which "install type" you wish to perform. We recommend you choose the default Easy Install. Press Install to continue
- You should then be asked whether you want the Universal client (works
on 680x0 or PowerMac processors) or a client specific to the processor type
or the PowerMac processor type. Choose as you wish, but note that the
universal client requires extra disk space. Press the button of your choice
to continue
- The installer will allow you to navigate to where you wish to install
ADSM, and prompt you to enter the name of the folder that you wish to use for ADSM. We recommend using the default value of ADSM Version 3f .
and we recommend saving this folder onto your Desktop. Press Install to continue.
Note: If you have an older version of ADSM you should install into
a new folder. Do not reuse the old folder.
- You should see a prompt warning you that you may need to restart your computer after the install. Press OK to continue.
- You will be prompted as to whether you want the ADSM Scheduling Daemon
installed. ADSM
Scheduling is a process that enables your Mac to automatically run incremental
backups once a day. Click
here to learn about the setup for automatic scheduling to help you
decide whether to install the scheduler daemon. Note: the server will automatically
be configured to work with your client's scheduler when you register (see
next item). After you have completed all steps in this document, you can check
the ADSM Scheduler Log file in your ADSM folder to verify that scheduling
is working after you are finished this entire document. Click
here for information about the contents of the scheduler log.
Press Yes or No accordingly.
- You may be asked if you want a "default" ADSM Preferences file to be installed in your Preferences folder. Respond with OK. Do not copy your version 2 ADSM Preferences file as recommended.

3. Register Your Mac For ADSM Backups on the New Server
|
| |
Before using ADSM Backup, you must register your machine with the new ADSM server.
This is so that the server is aware of your machine, and it also provides you
with security, so that data may only be saved or restored with a password.
Note: You must register again with the new server, even if you
had registered before with the old server.
- Click the link below to register your machine with ADSM.
- A new browser window will open, displaying the ACCC ADSM backup policies.
Read them; if your machine qualifies for ADSM backup service, click the I
agree with the above provisions button.
- You will be asked to Bluestem authenticate yourself by entering your UIC
netid and password.
- You will be asked to choose a new ADSM password. This password is unique
to ADSM and is not related to your other passwords.
- Follow all of the registration instructions, then close the new browser
window and continue following the instructions below.
Click here to register your machine
with ADSM.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
4. Configure Your Mac To Use ADSM
|
| |
- Double-click the ADSM Backup Client icon in the ADSM installation
folder (which was most likely named ADSM Version 3f).
- When prompted for your ADSM login password, press the Cancel button.
- You should see the message "Operation stopped by user". Press OK
to continue.
- Click on the Edit menu on your ADSM toolbar (near the top left of
your screen).
- Click on the Preferences menu choice.
- Click on the General tab in the preferences box
- Enter the ADSM "Node Name" that you received during registration into the
Node Name box. (If your UIC netid is "janedoe" then your ADSM node
name is most likely: janedoe.adsm1 )
- Click on the TCP/IP tab (you may have to click on the tab bar arrow
to bring this tab into view).
- Look for the TCP Server Address box. Next add the name of your ADSM server:
- If you have just signed up for ADSM or if you have received an email message from the ACCC asking you to switch to ADSM-2, your server is adsm-2.cc.uic.edu.
- If you have been using ADSM for some time and you haven't been told to switch yet, your server is adsm.cc.uic.edu.
- Press OK to accept the updates and exit the Preferences window.
- You should see a popup telling you that you may need to restart your client
in order for the preferences change to take effect. Press OK to continue.
- Now quit out of the ADSM client completely by clicking on File then
Quit on the ADSM toolbar at the top left of your screen.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
5. Start Your First Full ADSM Backup Manually
|
| |
- Start the ADSM client manually any time by clicking on the ADSM Backup
Client icon in your ADSM installation folder.
- Enter your new ADSM password when prompted for it.
- You should now see the ADSM Main Menu
window. Click on the Backup button-bar.
- Now you should see the ADSM Backup
window. You will be given the choice to make backups of your local,
network or removable drives. Click on the small gray box to
the left of the local choice so that local
is checkmarked.
Note: Do not click on the network drives box because that
will cause a backup of files on your Novell or NT file server!
- You should then see the ADSM
Backup Status window change as files are backed up. All
files on your Mac will be backed up during this first run and this may take
several hours to complete. Future backup runs will be shorter incremental
backups and will only copy files that have been created or changed since
the previous ADSM backup run.
- When the backup is completed, you should see the ADSM
Backup completed window.
That's it for manual backups. You can run a manual backup whenever you
please, but read on to learn how to automate your backups and how to recover
files from the ADSM backup server.

6. Schedule Further Automatic ADSM Backups
|
| |
ADSM can be configured to perform an automatic incremental backup each
day. Review the information in step 2.8 above for information on enabling scheduling.
You can choose to have the scheduler running at all times (at a cost of some
system memory) or you can choose to use a smaller footprint "daemon" that will
periodically wake up and start the scheduler for brief periods. In either case,
you will have to add the proper icon to the Startup folder in your System
folder. (Note: a link to the complete user's manual can be found at the bottom
of this page.)
You should verify that automatic scheduling is enabled by restarting your
Mac (SPECIAL/RESTART). You should be prompted for your ADSM password as the
Mac is coming up. If you are not prompted, then you are not yet properly configured
scheduling.
This automatic backup will create backup copies of any new files
you've created since the previous backup or any files that you have changed
since that last backup.
Once scheduling is running, your ADSM scheduler will negotiate with the ADSM
server to choose a start time for your daily backup. It will be a random time
between 4 PM and 4 AM. Your machine must be up and running for the backup
to actually run. Don't turn it off when you leave for
the day.
You can verify the results of your backup by viewing a copy of the dsmsched.log
file that should be located in the same folder as the ADSM backup client.
