ADSM/TSM Tivoli Storage Manager Network File Backup for Personal Workstations

Note November, 2008: Security Problem Forces Client Updates

There is a "moderately severe" security hole in the TSM client software, in the Client Acceptor Daemon, or CAD, and in the Backup-Archive client scheduler and scheduler service when the option SCHEDMODE is set to PROMPTED. Because this security hole exists in the client software, rather than the server software, the ACCC cannot fix it. Instead you have to fix it -- you must update to the newest versions of the TSM client for your platform.

The CAD exists in the TSM client on all modern platforms, and it is one way to run scheduled backups in TSM. While the ACCC instructions only explain the CAD's use on Macs, it is easy to set recent TSM clients up to use the CAD and we know that some people using other platforms are using it.

The solution to this problem for everyone -- regardless of how you run your scheduled backups -- is to upgrade your TSM client software to the newest version for your operating system. These versions are available through ADSM Download and ftp.uic.edu.

In most cases, the new version can simply be installed on top of the previous version, and all your settings will be saved. You will need to reboot after upgrading, in order for the automatic scheduler to be restarted with the new fixed code.

It was previously thought that the versions for obsolete operating systems were immune to this bug, but that appears not to be the case, and there are no patched versions for some of those O/Ss. See the list on the ADSM Download page.

ADSM has completely changed, including the software's name -- it's now Tivoli Storage Manager -- and we have now have two machines running it, which means that ADSM can easily handle many more users.

Only faculty and staff are eligible to use TSM; only one personal workstation per person, and that workstation has to be on the UIC campus and on the UIC campus wired network or UIC-Wireless network. (Not cable, DSL, or dialin lines.)

ADSM backups allow you to retrieve files you inadvertently erase or to recover from hard disk failure. Use ADSM to back up your personal computer over the network, unattended. Do it before you lose files.

We also make ADSM backups of your files on the ACCC UNIX servers tigger and icarus for you; you can use the DSM and DSMC UNIX commands to restore files from these backups. We also use ADSM to back up all the servers that we keep your ACCC uic.edu email on. If your email account is on mailserv, you must send email requesting the return of lost email to systems@uic.edu very soon after you lose it. The rapid changes in email means that copies don't get kept in the backups very long.

See ADSM Backup for FaCT Personal Computers for instructions on setting up FaCT faculty computers up to use ADSM.
