Norton AntiVirus for Macs Version 10
|
| |
You
must have administrator permissions and must enter your username and password to install
NAV, to run LiveUpdate manually, or to schedule automatic LiveUpdates. The account
that scheduled the LiveUpdate has to be logged in to run LiveUpdate, though a missed LiveUpdate will be run when the account is logged back in. (A new feature.)
You may want to print a copy of these instructions for reference during installation.
Also, if you run Virtual PC, SoftWindows, or SoftPC, which emulate the Windows
environment on a Mac, you need to run Windows antivirus software in your virtual
Windows OS. NAV for the Mac won't protect it. That's not a problem for anyone
at UIC, because you can get SAV for Windows at
no charge.

-- If You Already Have AntiVirus Installed
|
| |
- You must uninstall any previous antivirus software before installing SAV 10.2.

- You can easily uninstall previous versions of Norton AntiVirus using the Uninstaller that comes with Symantec SAV 10.2.

New Features
|
| |
- Custom Auto-Protect SafeZones
- Allows users to specify which areas of their drive (or certain volumes, directories and files) to be scanned (or not). This is particularly useful for video and media editors who are likely to have huge directories or volumes that are known to be safe and would take an extraordinary amount of time to scan.
The definitions of
Auto-Protect SafeZones can use "wildcard" pattern-matching.
- Contextual Menu Support
-
- Allows users to scan files and directories “on the fly” by right-clicking/control-clicking.
- Allows users to scan files and directories manually without launching the application.
- Smart Volume Scanning
- Symantec AntiVirus will remember previously scanned CD or DVDs thereby eliminating unnecessary scans.
- Others
-
- Allows events scheduled to run while the
Mac is shut down to run when started.
- If you create and event as root, it will run in all
user spaces as the logged-in user.
- Universal application optimized for PowerPC and Intel Macs.
- Compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.10 and later (Tiger), and 10.5 (Leopard).
Warnings:
- Do not install or run Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 for Mac from a UFS formatted disk.
- Do not install or run Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 for Mac from a Case-Sensitive HFS+ formatted disk.
- Auto-Protect does not scan StuffIt archives in .sitx format. However, .sitx archives can be manually scanned for viruses. Corrupt .sit and .sitx archives may cause Symantec AntiVirus to unexpectedly quit.
Notes:
- Scanning a folder containing a lot of files may take several seconds to start. The reason is because the scanner is counting how many files are included in the scan. Scanning an entire volume does not typically have this delay, because the scanner can often obtain this count directly from the volume data.
- If Symantec AntiVirus finds an infected file on your computer, one of the alerts that it may display is, "Infected files were found and could not be repaired. The files may be in Quarantine." The notification that follows the alert may say, "No viruses were repaired." This does not necessarily mean that no infected files were found. As the alert indicated, the infected file may be in Quarantine, because it is not repairable with current virus definitions.

Download Symantec AntiVirus Version 10.2 for Macintosh
|
| |
Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 for Mac OS 10.4.10+ can be downloaded individually ("purchased") from the ACCC's
E-sales Web site. You will have to login to e-sales via Bluestem using
your UIC netid and ACCC password. Symantec Antivirus continues to be available
to the entire UIC community, faculty, staff, and registered students, at no

Schedule LiveUpdate and Regular NAV Scans
|
| |
Do both of these to keep your software and virus definitions up-to-date and to regularly scan your computer.
- Schedule a Daily LiveUpdate:
- Either open SAV Applications
Symantec Antivirus, then select Utilities Symantec Scheduler
Or using Symantec/Norton QuickMenu: click on the yellow-and-black Symantec logo on the right side of the menu bar on the top of your screen, select LiveUpdate, then Open Symantec Scheduler.

- Click New....
- Click Product Update.
- Select All Products from the dropdown list; LiveUpdate will update the program and search engine as well as the virus definitions.
- The default to check for updates is Monthly; that isn't enough. Weekly is probably enough for Macs, but if you want to be a good network citizen, do it Daily. So select Daily from the dropdown list.
- Choose a time when your computer will be on and attached to the Internet, and preferably, when it won't interfere with your work. I leave my computer running all the time, so I chose 5 in the morning.
- Click Save.

- By default, SAV Virus Auto-Protect is turned on, to protect files as you read and write them,
including attachments in Eudora and Outlook. You can turn Auto-Protect on and off, and define Safe Zones -- which aren't scanned -- using Norton QuickMenu and the Symantec Auto-Protect item in Systems Preferences.
- SAV will automatically scan a CD or .dmg file when you open it. You control this using Norton QuickMenu and the Symantec Auto-Protect item in Systems Preferences.
- Schedule a Regular Weekly Scan:
- Either open SAV Applications
Symantec Antivirus, then select Utilities Symantec Scheduler
Or using Symantec/Norton QuickMenu: click on the yellow-and-black Symantec logo on the right side of the menu bar on the top of your screen, select LiveUpdate, then Open Symantec Scheduler.

- Click New....
- Click AntiVirus Scan.
- Enter an appropriate name for the scan.
- Click Browse...
- Click Macintosh HD and click Select.
- If you run the scan at a time that your computer is on and logged in and on the Internet, but you aren't there, you can move Set a Priority to High.
- Set a Frequency, Weekly is fine.
- Select a time and day. Thursday is a good day because Symantec usually releases new virus definitions on Wednesday.
- Click Save.

-- Running a Manual Scan:
If you'd like to run SAV manually:
- Either open SAV Applications
Symantec Antivirus
Or using Symantec/Norton QuickMenu: click on the yellow-and-black Symantec logo on the right side of the menu bar on the top of your screen, select Symantec AntiVirus , then Open Symantec AntiVirus.

You can also turn off and on Auto-Protect and Scan On Mount using the Symantec AntiVirus QuickMenu menu item.

- Select
a disk, folder, or file to scan and click Select.

SAV 10.2 Preferences
|
| |
The SAV 10.2 Preferences are kept in Systems Preferences. There are two ways to get at them -- directly in System Preferences and with Symantec QuickMenu. QuickMenu is turned on by default.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
-- The Symantec/Norton QuickMenu Preferences
|
| |
- Using Systems Preferences: Finder
Applications System Preferences, under Other Symantec QuickMenu

Or using Symantec/Norton QuickMenu: click on the yellow-and-black Symantec logo on the right side of the menu bar on the top of your screen, select Norton QuickMenu, then Preferences....

- The Symantec QuickMenu preference turns QuickMenu on and off; the default is on.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
-- The Symantec Auto-Protect Preferences
|
| |
- Using Systems Preferences: Finder
Applications System Preferences, under Other Symantec Auto-Protect

Or using Symantec/Norton QuickMenu: click on the yellow-and-black Symantec logo on the right side of the menu bar on the top of your screen, select Symantec AntiVirus, then Open Auto-Protect Preferences....

- Symantec Auto-Protect sets a number of SAV options.
- Before you change each of the tabs, you must click the lock at the bottom left corner and enter an administrator name and password to unlock the preference so it can be changed.
- Select Enable Symantec Auto-Protect to turn on Auto-Protect; Auto-Protect is turned on by default.
- In the General tab, you can turn Automatic Repair on or off; choose to Quarantine files that cannot be repaired, and select to scan compressed files. (Though the compressed file choice can be made in SAV also.)

- In the SafeZone tab, you can define folders that SAV should or should not run auto-protect on. The theory behind this is that if you have folders with, say large movie files that you know won't have any problems, you can tell SAV not to bother scanning them as you write or modify them. Click Add... and select files or folders to be included or excluded. The default is to exclude nothing.

- In the Mount Scan tab, you select the types of media you want to be scanned when it is mounted. The defaults here should be fine.
