Download, Installation, and Usage Instructions for Norton AntiVirus for Older Macs

This page describes NAV Version 9 for older Macs. Not your Mac OS? See Norton AntiVirus and Symantec AntiVirus for Apple Macintosh.

Norton AntiVirus for Macs Version 9.0

The ACCC distributes two versions of Norton AntiVirus (NAV) for Mac OS: NAV Version 9 for Mac OS 8.1 though 9.x and Mac OS X version 10.1.5 to 10.3.9 and NAV Version 10 for Mac OS 10.3+. When running NAV in MAC OS X, you must have administrator permissions and must enter your ID and password to install NAV, to run LiveUpdate manually, or to schedule automatic LiveUpdates. The account that scheduled the LiveUpdate has to be logged in to run it.

You may want to print a copy of these instructions for reference during installation. For more information, refer to the the reference guide.

NAV Version 9.0 is the first Mac version of NAV that recognizes Windows viruses and worms; this is a good thing because it will prevent your relaying them. You should take precautions, however, so you don't accidentally delete any of your email mailboxes. See Restoring Quarantined Mailboxes for instructions on how to exclude your mailbox files from Realtime File Protection / Auto-Protect.

Also, if you run Virtual PC, SoftWindows, or SoftPC, which emulate the Windows environment on a Mac, you need to run Windows antivirus software in your virtual Windows OS. NAV for the Mac won't protect it. That's not a problem for anyone at UIC, because you can get Symantec AntiVirus for Windows at no charge.

System Requirements for NAV Version 9.0

Mac OS X

  • Macintosh OS X version 10.1.5 to 10.3.9 (SAV Version 9 does not support Mac OS X versions 10.0 to 10.1.4. If you want to install run Norton AntiVirus on Mac OS X, you must upgrade to at least Mac OS X 10.1.5.)
  • G3 or G4 processor
  • 128 MB of RAM
  • 30 MB of available hard disk space for installation

Installing the Mac OS X version protects both Mac OS X and Mac Classic.

Mac Classic

  • PowerPC-based Macintosh system
  • Mac OS 8.1 or higher
  • 24 MB of RAM
  • 10 MB of available hard disk space

Download Norton Antivirus Version 9.0 for Macintosh

Versions of Norton/Symantec Antivirus specifically for Mac OS 8/9 and for older Mac OS X can be downloaded individually ("purchased") from the ACCC's e-sales Web site. You will have to login to e-sales via Bluestem using your UIC netid and ACCC password. Norton AntiVirus continues to be available to the entire UIC community, faculty, staff, and registered students, at no charge. You can download it directly from the E-sales site.

illustration of e-sales main menu

After you log in to e-sales, click on the small down arrow beside Search by product categories on the E-sales main menu. Select Virus Protection, at the bottom, then click Go.

You will have to go through the whole E-sales "purchase" process, even though Norton Antivirus is free. If you're experienced at buying online, you shouldn't have too much trouble. If not, you might want to see the E-sales how-to documentation; it walks you though the whole process.

I would tell you to pick the proper version depending on whether you are installing on Mac OS 8/9 or Mac OS X, but at the moment, both versions have installations for both OSes. That might change, so it still pays to pick the proper version for your OS. If, instead of downloading the Norton install file, it's opened in your browser as a bunch of gibberish, click the Back button, then Option- or Command-Click on the Install Now button (it varies with different browsers), and select the menu item that says something like " download this file".

The download files are 40 Mb, so they will take a while to download, even on campus. They can be downloaded from off-campus, particularly if you have a broadband connection. But if you're getting NAV for your home computer and you have a slow connection at home, your best bet is to go to an ACCC lab and use a Mac there that has a CD burner, download the installer file, write it on a CD, and take it home on the CD. It is highly recommended that the CD be made on a clean machine, for example, an ACCC lab machine that has been properly logged-out of.

Uncompressing NAV
Your browser may have uncompressed the file and made a folder with the file name in your default download location. If not, go the folder where you downloaded the file to. Double-click on the file name to expand into the same location.

*NOTE* If your screen comes up with garbage after you click on the download link, make sure you have Stuffit Expander installed. You will need the Stuffit expander utility to uncompress the files. If you do not have it, you can download it from Aladdin Systems, Inc. These instructions are written under the assumption that you are using a Macintosh to download these files.

Installing Norton AntiVirus Version 9.0

Note: These instructions and illustrations are for NAV 8.0. Installing NAV 9.0 is similar. The most important difference is that LiveUpdate is run automatically after installation, before you reboot.

  1. If you have an antivirus program currently installed, turn it off and uninstall it. Note: The Norton AntiVirus 9.0 installer for OS X removes Norton AntiVirus 7.0.2 for OS X, or Norton AntiVirus 8.0.x for OS X, during installation, if they are installed.

  2. Insert the CD. Your browser should have automatically uncompressed the file for you. If not, double-click the file name to expand it.

  3. Go to the directory where the file was saved, and double-click the "Install for" icon for your type of Mac OS. Double-click the Install Norton AntiVirus icon.

  4. If you're using Mac OS X:
    • If you're installing on Mac OS X 10.2 or higher, the Authenticate window will open automatically; enter an administrator ID and password and click OK to authenticate the installation.
    • If you're using Max OS X 10.1.5, click on the lock in the lower-left corner of the Authorization window to open the Authenticate window; enter an administrator ID and password and click OK to authenticate the installation.

  5. Mac OS X:
    1. In the Select a Destination screen, select the disk you that you want to install NAV on then click Continue.
    2. In the Easy Install screen, select Easy Install, then follow the prompts.
    3. in the Norton Antivirus welcome screen, click Continue.
    4. Read the Read Me file, and click Continue.
    5. In the Software License Agreement screen, click Continue.
    6. The Agreement dialog box will open; click Agree.

  6. Mac 8/9:
    1. In the Norton AntiVirus welcome screen, click Continue.
    2. In the License screen, click Accept.
    3. Read the Read Me screen and click Continue.
    4. In the Install Norton AntiVirus screen, select the Install Location and Easy Install, and click Install.

  7. Restart when you're asked to.

  8. After the Norton installer finishes and your restart your Mac, run LiveUpdate to update your virus definitions. If you get an error message about NAV when your reboot on MAC OS X, ignore it; it should be fixed when your client gets updated when you run LiveUpdate.

  9. Norton Solutions -> LiveUpdate -> Update Everything Now button. (See figure 1.) If anything is updated, click Restart when LiveUpdate finishes. Remember that to run LiveUpdate, you computer must be on and connected to the Internet, and MAC OS X, the user who scheduled the LiveUpdate must be logged in.

Figure 1: Mac OS X LiveUpdate

Use Update Everything Now to run LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler schedules regular updates. The LiveUpdate window looks and works very much the same in Mac OS 8/9.

  10. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect protects files as you read and write them, including attachments in Eudora and Outlook.
    • In Mac OS 8/9, Auto-Protect comes automatically turned on (click the Preferences button to check).
    • In MAC OS X, you have to turn it on if you want to use it. Click the Preferences button, click the Auto-Protect icon, then turn Automatic Scanning and Automatic Repair on. (Figure 2 .)

  11. Symantec says that you don't need to run a NAV scan regularly if you run Auto-Protect all the time. I think you should.

But if you'd like to run it, start Norton AntiVirus by double-clicking the Norton AntiVirus icon. In the main window, select a disk, folder, or file to scan from the lists, and click Scan (figure 2 ). Or drag and drop a file or folder that you want to scan onto NAV.

Figure 2: Mac OS X NAV Scan

illustration of MacOS X NAV manual scan

  12. You can also schedule regular scan if you wish. I think it is a good idea.
    • For MAC OS 8/9, start in NAV and select Tools -> Scheduler.
    • For Mac OS X, click the Schedule button; the folder you want to scan is "root": /

  13. It is important to keep your virus protection up-to-date by running LiveUpdate on a regular basis, say once a week. (That was a while ago. These days there are more viruses and worms; daily makes more sense.)

Scheduling LiveUpdate for Mac OS 8/9

Note: These instructions set LiveUpdate up to run Weekly. Now, I think it's a better idea to run it daily.

  1. In the LiveUpdate main window, click Schedule Future Updates. This opens the LiveUpdate Scheduler window (figure 3 shows the Scheduler for version 8).

Figure 3: Mac OS 8/9 LiveUpdate Scheduler

illustration of setting LiveUpdate to run automatically in MacOS 8/9

  2. Click New to create a new scheduled event. This opens a dialog box that allows you to enter a name for the event; in the figure, we've called it Weekly. Then click OK.
  3. Select Update All from the Event Type: dropdown list.
  4. Select weekly from the How Often: list. (We recommend Daily now.)
  5. Select a time and date when the computer will be on and connected to the Internet.
  6. Click Done.

Scheduling LiveUpdate for Mac OS X (and Scans too)

Note: These instructions set LiveUpdate up to run Weekly. Now, I think it's a better idea to run it daily.

  1. In the NAV main window (figure 2 ), click Schedule.
  2. Click the New button, then click the Product Update icon (which has the LiveUpdate icon on it) to open the Add Product Task window (figure 4).

Figure 4: Mac OS X LiveUpdate Scheduler

illustration of setting LiveUpdate to run automatically in MacOS X

  3. Enter a name for the task in the text box at the top.
  4. Select All Products as the products to update.
  5. Select a frequency; we recommend Daily now.
  6. Select a day and time when the Mac will be connected to the Internet and the person scheduling the LiveUpdate will be logged into it.
  7. Click the Save button.

You schedule a scan the same way; just click the AntiVirus Scan button rather than the Product Update button.

NAV for the Mac LiveUpdate Subscription Code

Each year you have to enter a subscription code to continue to be able to run LiveUpdates with NAV for the Mac. (Mac only; this isn't true of the Windows SAV.)

You have to enter the code when you're running LiveUpdate, after you've downloaded an update. The Symantec Web site has step by step instructions:

And the code itself is in this Bluestem protected page:

Mac LiveUpdate Subscription Code
