Using Commercial Internet Service Providers

Consider using a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) if you: (1) live outside the UIC local calling area, (2) need to connect first time, every time, or (3) want a very fast connection. If any of these apply to you, see Connecting from Home - Finding an ISP, and in particular the Warning: When you connect through an commercial ISP, you are not "on the UIC campus" page.

Some things to note:

  • You are not limited to using a single ISP. You can use two sets of dial-up adapters and two TCP/IP protocols - one for UIC, one for a commercial ISP. Appendix B, Troubleshooting, will help.

  • Almost all NSKit applications will work when connecting with any ISP. As explained in Finding an ISP, you must change a sending email option when switching from an ACCC connection to another ISP.

  • You'll have to authenticate to use some UIC-based Web resources (for example, some library databases) when you connect using another ISP.
