THE - The Hessling Editor
Differences between
THE and XEDIT

Plain and Simple Differences

  • Commands which take a numeric operand require a space between the command name and the operand, e.g. "n 3".
  • Not all cursor commands have been implemented. Most can be emulated with the SET ZONE command.
  • The screen automatically scrolls left and right when the cursor passes the screen edge.
  • The "quit" command abbreviates to "qu" - "q" is insufficient.
  • The multiple match arbitrary character is not yet implemented.
  • String delimiters are limited to the set: "/", "\" and "@".
  • An equal sign "=" entered on the command line repeats the last command as in XEDIT, but only one is supported.
  • A question mark "?" entered on the command line redisplays the last command as in XEDIT, but only one is supported.
  • The default width of a file is 512 characters. This may be increased with the "-w" command line option, e.g. the -w 2000 file.ext
  • Case defaults to mixed case. Adds support for case significance in both CHANGE and SORT commands.
  • Multiple sort columns can be sorted in different directions.

Features in THE which are not in XEDIT

  • Blocks of text can be selected. Selected blocks can be copied, moved, deleted or filled with a character.
  • Directories can be displayed and files within them edited, somewhat like filelist.
