Appendix C: Mac Client Install and Setup

 

The new Oracle Native Client for the Mac is runs only on Mac OS X. If you are still running Mac OS 9.x, install Oracle Calendar for the Mac Version 9.04, which works on Mac OS 9.x.

To Install the Oracle Calendar Desktop Client on Macintosh
Administrator privileges are required to install the Oracle Calendar desktop client on Macintosh.
  
     
Installing Oracle Mac Client Version 10.1.2 for Mac OS 10.x
 
  1. Download the Mac Version 10.2 executable file.
  2. Double-click the executable file (for example, cal_mac_OSX_x.dmg). The Oracle Calendar mounted disk appears in your Finder window.
  3. Double-click the Oracle Calendar mounted disk icon.
  4. Select the Oracle Calendar and readme files and drag them to the folder where you want to install the Oracle Calendar desktop client for Macintosh, most likely your Applications folder.

Note: Oracle recommends installing the Oracle Calendar desktop client for Macintosh in your Applications folder. If you choose to install in the Applications folder, you may be prompted to enter an administrator password.

  • The installer extracts the application and copies the Readme.htm file into the destination folder you select.
  • The installer also extracts all shared libraries to /Library/CFMSupport/.
  • The installer copies Oracle Calendar Help to /Library/Documentation/Help.
  
     
Setting Up UICalendar
 

The first time you open the Oracle Calendar Mac client, you have to set it up to open your UICal account.

  1. Open the Finder, click on Applications, then double-click the Oracle Calendar icon to open Oracle Calendar.

  2. At first, only the Off-line login will be defined. You need to add a login for the UICalendar server; click the Other button.

  3. The Connection Editor window opens.

    1. For Connection Name:, type: UICalendar
    2. For Server:, type: uicalendar.uic.edu
    3. Click the Lookup button
    4. From the popup list for Node:, select: 1000
    5. Make sure that:
      • Auth Method is: Standard Authentication
      • Compression Method is: Run Length Encoding Co...
      • Encryption Method is: Affine Cipher or Light Encryption if you don't have Affine Cipher.
    6. Click OK
  4. Back in the Connection Manager windows, click on UICalendar to select it, click Make Default, and click Done.

  
     
Logging In
 

After that, when you open Oracle to login, UICalendar will be selected by default, and all you will have to do is enter your password -- after the first time you login Oracle will remember your netid -- and click Sign-in.

Installing Oracle Mac Client Version 9.04 for Mac OS 9.x
 

Note: You must have an Administrator account and password to install Oracle Calendar for Macs Version 9.04.

  1. Click on the Download Links link above and click on the download link for the Mac Oracle native client.
  2. Unstuff the downloaded file if necessary.
  3. Open the downloaded folder.
  4. Double-click the Oracle Calendar Installer icon
  5. If you're installing on Mac OS X, a window will opening saying that you need an Administrator password to install the software. Click on the open lock icon to open an Authenticate dialog box and type an administrator Name: (if necessary) and Password: and click OK.
  6. Choose folder for UICal to be installed; the default, the Applications folder, is the best choice.
  7. Click Install.
  8. Click Quit when you're told the install is finished.
  9. Set up is as described in Setting Up UICalendar above.

Installation Notes from the Readme File

  1. Ensure that you have administrative privileges.
  2. Ensure that the CarbonLib file is installed in the Extensions folder of your active System Folder to run the installer.
  3. Double-click cal_mac_OS9_904x.hqx and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • The installer extracts the application and copies the Readme.htm file into the destination folder you have selected. It also extracts all shared libraries to the Extensions folder and Oracle Calendar Help to the Help folder of your active System Folder.
    • If your CarbonLib file is prior to version 1.6, it is updated. Restart the computer for the updated system extension to take effect.
  4. Double-click the Oracle Calendar desktop client icon to start the application once installation is complete.
