See also Oracle Collaboration Suite Client Installations Oracle Collaboration Suite 10g Documentation Portal, which has installation information. Click on the + sign beside Oracle Calendar Sync in the left side index, then on Installing Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm (for Macintosh).

Current System Requirements

Requirement Value
Operating Systems Macintosh OS 10.2.x to 10.4.1 (I think this is just where Tiger was when the Oracle page was last edited; I don't think there is an upper limit on Mac OS version here.)
Disk Space

5 MB. If the Oracle Calendar desktop client for Macintosh is already installed, only 15 MB of disk space is required. (Yes, I know those numbers are weird, but that's what it says.)

RAM 8 MB (64 MB recommended)
Calendar server Oracle Calendar server 5.4 or later
Palm Palm Desktop version 4.o to 4.2.1 Note: Later releases of Palm Desktop may be compatible, but were not certified at the time Oracle Calendar Sync was released.
Device

The following devices are certified for compatibility with Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm on Macintosh. Similar devices may also be compatible.

  • Tungsten T
  • Tungsten T3
  • Zire 31
  • Zire 72
  • Treo 600
  • Sony Clie PEG-TG50C

The following devices do not work with Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm on Macintosh. See Note to Treo 650 and Tungsten T5 and E2 Users.

  • Tungsten E2
  • LifeDrive Mobile Manager

Note to Treo 650 and Tungsten T5 and E2 Users

There was a problem with the Treo 650 and the Tungsten T5 and Macs. This problem has now been solved. They do require Palm OS 5.4.8 or higher. Updaters are available on the Palm Web site.
Treo 650: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/treo650updater/

Newer Treo devices such as the Tungsten E2 have a different file system from the previous Palm versions, which prevents the Oracle Calendar Sync conduits from installing properly on some of them. The Palm Tungsten E2 is not supported with Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm for Macintosh in the current release.

Preparing to install over previous versions

This rest of this page page is taken from Chapter 5 of the Oracle Calendar Resource Kit, modified for use at UIC, and is specific for a slightly previous version of Oracle Calendar Sync.

If you already have Sync software installed on your computer and you have data stored in Palm Desktop, perform a HotSync.

If you have a Beta version of Oracle Calendar Sync installed, or if you have version 2.1.4 or earlier of Oracle Corporate Sync installed, you must do the following before installing Calendar Sync for Palm for Macintosh, in order to protect your data.

  1. Remove the Oracle Calendar Sync application (also known as CS Setup) from your PDA.
  2. Purge all items from your Date Book, To Do List and Address Book. If you do not do this, duplicates of the items will be created when you perform your first HotSync after installing Oracle Calendar Sync. Keep in mind the following when purging data:
    • Make sure that Save archive copy on PC is selected.
    • To Do items that have not been marked as completed will have to be manually deleted.
    • To delete the majority of, or all, Date Book events, advance the date on your organizer by several years, then do your purge. For example, change your organizer's date to 2015, then purge all events "older than 1 week" to delete all events from the past up until the year 2015.

Installing Oracle Calendar Sync 9.0.4 for Palm (Macintosh)

If you already have Sync software installed on your computer and you have data stored in Palm Desktop, perform a HotSync.

  1. From Appendix B: UIC Calendar Downloads, click on the download link for Mac Classic (if you're using Mac OS 9) or Mac OS X if you're using Mac OS X.

  2. Double-click the file cal_syncpalm_macOS9_9041.hqx (uicalendar.dmg.tar.gz if you are using OS X). This unstuffs the file and creates the Oracle Calendar Installer.

  3. Double-click Oracle Calendar Sync Install. In Mac OS X, you will have to enter an administrator password.

  4. Choose to install in the Default Folder and click Install.

  5. The installer checks for existing Sync files and installs the program. Depending on your setup, this may take several minutes. Some error messages may be generated and saved to the install log; you can ignore these messages.

  6. Copy Oracle Calendar Sync.prc from

    /Applications/Palm/Add-on/

    to: /Users/Mac_user/Documents/Palm/Users/Palm_user/FilestoInstall/

where Mac_user is name of your Mac account and Palm_user is your name on your PDA.

If you have only just recently installed Palm Desktop and the Files to Install folder doesn't exist, just create this folder manually.

Note: The installer will move the Datebook, ToDo, and Address conduits to a folder entitled Disabled Conduits.

  7. Turn on the PDA and place it in its cradle.

  8. Press the HotSync button on the front of the PDA cradle. The Oracle Calendar Sync application will be installed on your PDA.

Note: You may get error messages in the HotSync log saying that Oracle Calendar Sync cannot be located. Ignore these messages.

  9. If the HotSync Manager is running on your Mac, the installer will ask if you wish to close it. Click Yes to exit the HotSync Manager.

  10. On your Mac, click the HotSync icon in your HotSync folder and select HotSync Manager.

  11. From the HotSync menu, choose Conduit Settings. A list of synchronizable items appears. Choose how you want Oracle Calendar Events, Oracle Calendar Tasks, and Oracle Calendar Addresses to be synchronized by double-clicking each item. A dialog box appears with the following choices:
    • Synchronize the files: Synchronizes all information that exists on both your PDA and in Oracle Calendar.
    • Macintosh overwrites handheld: Information in your Oracle Calendar Agenda overwrites Events, Tasks or Addresses on your PDA.
    • Do Nothing: The specified Entry type is not synchronized.

Note that on the Macintosh, there isn't an option in which the PDA overwrites Oracle Calendar. (There is on the Oracle Calendar Sync for Windows.)

  12. Select a user name from the popup list at top of the Conduit Settings dialog box. If there is only one user name, it will be selected automatically.
  13. Open Oracle Calendar Sync on your PDA and enter your
    • Calendar User Name -- your UIC netid
    • Password -- your ACCC common password
    • Server -- uicalendar.uic.edu
    • Node -- 1000

Oracle Calendar Sync is now installed but no Entry information has been synchronized. Press the HotSync button on the front of the PDA cradle and a sync will be performed.
