April 26, 2005: Version 1.4.4 in Production

We moved SquirrelMail, Version 1.4.4, into production today. We are no longer using the temporary SquirrelMail server.

The important differences are in the deleted mail behaviour.

  • In the temporary server, the default deleted mail behavior was that deleted mail was immediately deleted.

  • In the production server, we have turned a "trash folder" on by default; it is called deleted. You can undelete deleted email messaged from the deleted folders, but only in the Webmail session that you delete them in.

  • In the production server, we have also set Webmail up to delete all the messages in the deleted folder -- or whatever other folder you select for your trash folder if you change it in Options -> Folder Preferences -- automatically when you log out from Webmail.

  • So a warning. Don't set your trash folder to be any email folder that you want to keep email in. Like your sent-mail folder, for example.

  • See Deleting and Undeleting Messages.

We have also solved two problems that people had with the temporary SquirrelMail Webmail server:

  • Problems with timing out.
    • We don't think you will time out.
    • The new version of SquirrelMail has a default refresh rate of 30 minutes and a session length of an hour, therefore it should not timeout anymore.
    • So it's up to you now to log off -- click the Sign Out link -- when you leave. You don't want someone else reading your email or sending email messages in your name if you leave your Webmail account logged on on a public personal computer.

  • Problems with finding the Use Addresses button when selecting addresses from your addresses.
    • Has also been fixed in the production version.
    • It's now at the left hand side even if you have a very long list in your email addresses.
