WebMail Down Thursday 11PM

May 24 2001 - WebMail will be down for about an hour starting at 11pm on Thursday night. WebMail won't force you to logout if you are connected to it at 11pm, but you will be asked to login again when it comes back up.

Web/Mail disruption at 5:00 PM on Friday, May 18

May 18 2001 - At 5:00 PM on Friday, May 18th, there will be a slight disruption in Web and mail service due to disaster recovery testing as well as maintenance to the netapp machine.

Though it appears as if university and department Web pages are located on tigger, they are actually on a machine called the netapp. On Friday, we are going to do some behind-the-scenes activities to point DNS to a backup copy of the netapp. Then, we will reinitialize the UIC Web servers, pointing them at the backup. During the reinitialization phase which should take a couple of minutes, Web service may be unavailable or, if available, appear sluggish.

During the upgrade when DNS is pointing to read-only copies of university and department Web pages, clients will not be able to alter them. That is not the case for personal Web pages.

Also, SMTP servers for outgoing mail will be rebooted and will be unresponsive for a brief period of time.

New Outlook email worm: Homepage

May 15 2001 - Homepage is is a new email worm spread by Outlook/Exchange. ZDNet has a good article about it, with links on how to get rid of it: http://www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/main/0,5594,2708116,00.html

From that article:

How it works: Homepage arrives as an e-mail with the following:

Subject: Homepage

Body: Hi!

You've got to see this page! It's really cool ;O)

Attachment: Homepage.HTML.vbs

If the user opens the Homepage attachment, it sends a copy of itself to everyone in your address book. Homepage then randomly chooses an adult Web page to display on the system's default Internet browser. Homepage will also search a user's Inbox and Deleted Items folder in Outlook and remove any e-mail with the subject line "Homepage."

Homepage has showed up at UIC. If you get an email message with this subject, check with the person who sent it to you before you open it.
