Jul 30 2001 - There is a hardware problem with the ATM link leaving campus. We do not yet know the exact cause or when our external link will be fully operational. We should know more shortly. |

Jul 30 2001 - Our inability to connect to the internet was caused by massive denial of service attacks from numerous hosts on the internet, things are under control now and you should be able to connect to off campus sites once again, connections to some of our peers are still down but they should be reachable via less optimal routes. - In preparation for the coming academic year, Sun came in Sunday, July 22, 2001, and installed a new CPU and more memory
on icarus. We also installed all applicable operating systems patches so
it should be all ready to go. |

| Tigger OS upgrade in place | ||

Jul 22 2001 - The operating system on tigger was upgraded from AIX version 4.2.1 to AIX 4.3.3 on Sunday morning, 7/22/2001. This upgrade includes 64-bit support which is required for new hardware scheduled to arrive later in the summer. There have been few problems reported so far on Sunday, but some we know about are:

Jul 19 2001 - Tigger will be unavailable starting this Saturday night, July 21, starting at 4pm and ending no earlier than Sunday morning 2am. We will be attempting to upgrade to AIX version 4.3 in preparation for new hardware that will be arriving this summer. The www.uic.edu Web pages will still work, generally, during the upgrade, but the following services will not be available:

Jul 14 2001 - On Thursday night, Borg experienced a catastrophic memory problem and was unavailable until late Friday night. Borg is now available. However, at 10:00 AM on Saturday July 14, borg will be rebooted to complete the recovery procedure. |

- The ACCC's compute server, borg.cc.uic.edu, has been down since late last night. This is a problem rather than a scheduled downtime; we don't at this time know how long it will take to fix. |
