Emergency router downtime, Tue 12/11/01 6am.

Dec 11 2001 - To help correct certain router issues that have been exacerbated by the recent spate of viruses affecting campus, we will be replacing the processor on our main internet border router tomorrow morning, Tuesday, December 11th, at 6am. This will affect all internet connectivity, including connections to UIUC, but NOT Rockford and Peoria. We are currently scheduling a half hour of downtime, with service restored by 6:30am, but actual downtime is not expected to last more than 5 minutes. We apologize for the inconvenience. Tigger crash Wednesday Afternoon

Dec 05 2001 - Tigger seemingly was the victim of another distributed denial of service attack, but events played out quite differently than they did Tuesday, so we can't be sure. The network monitor showed a clear but very brief spike in inbound traffic and tigger crashed at nearly the same moment. The crash logs, however, complain of "microcode mismatch" problems with two different disk adapters. It's all quite strange... we'll contact IBM in the morning to see if they can help us decipher what happened.
