Ameritech switch problem

Mar 25 2002 - Follow-up info on Ameritech/SBC/AADS outage on Saturday 03/24/02, called Genuity for any further information on ticket number (#146886) the only information provided to them from Ameritech was that a switch failed and was repaired. But in checking with ASI ticket number (#977048) the information provided to them was that this was scheduled maintenance. Unsure of just what really occurred, information being provided seems a little scratchy two site given difference interpolations on what really went down. UIC lost connectivity to the outside world for about an hour or so with intermitting failure prior to a total drop in service which seem to have occurred at 3:55am. But which seemed to have started at about 2:15am. Our UIC-UIUC was unaffected by said outage. No other info available!

Nap.net peering interface

Mar 24 2002 - At about 3am a user called who said he had a hard wired connection to his office and he was connected from home and it seemed that he was having packet lost and dropping connection. He asked if I noticed any problems and at the time in question I hadn't noticed any I continued with the backup schedule. But at a little after 4am he called back stating that he had lost all connection I told him I still hadn't noticed anything happening but I would need to search around. As I proceeded to investigate the matter I founded that on our Daily Graph ATM12/0.1-aaI5 layer---uic-fddi-16 indicated a complete drop at or about 4am. My first assumption was our Ameritech switch had gone down. At the same time I had paged the POW just in case it was something local, also I proceeded to call ASI who monitors our UIC connection for any further verification of any problem. After reaching ASI I got the message all of our representatives are assisting other customers which indicated that there was a real problem and others were trying to find out what was happening. I also called Genuity to get some type of confirmation that we had serious problem, on reaching them they stated that there was a problem with the Ameritech Chicago switch. Genuity provided a ticket number of 146886 and ASI's ticket number was 977048. Hey before I was able to complete this noticfication the connection was restored no explanation from Ameritech as of yet but service seem to have been restored at 5:05am. I also forgot to say that I woke up the Network manager for some clear in site on what the problem may have been.

UIC peering interface.

Mar 24 2002 - Update to the Ameritech switch problem reported earier, Genuity contacted again for more on what occurred. Genuity only had that Ameritech lost there switch and service restore by Ameritech and they gave no explanation on what cause the outage. Genuity stated that the switch was going up and down from about 2:15 and finally went all the way down at about 3:55. Some peers show that they are not yet restored such as vBns peering interface, Ferrmi and Comdisco.

LISTSERV server down - hardware problem

Mar 19 2002 - We are experiencing a hardware problem with the UIC LISTSERV server. This server distributes e-mail for discussion groups such as ACADEMY and REACH-L, so mail posted to such lists will be delayed until repairs are completed.

We currently have only a rough estimate of being up by 3pm. This may become clearer as repairs progress.

We regret any inconveniences caused by this outage.

LISTSERV up and running again

Mar 19 2002 - Listserv is now up and running again. There is a small chance that postings made between midnight and 4am Tuesday may have been lost during the hardware failure. We will attempt to contact anyone affected via email. But, if you posted a message to listserv@uic.edu during this time period, you may want to verify that the posting was properly delivered to recipients.
