SQL virus update

Jan 26 2003 - By now you probably have all heard about this on the news so I won't go into details. It started around 11PM Friday. We have been shutting down infected internal vlans as needed to keep the rest of the net operational. We continue to monitor the situation. There are still some attacks coming in from our external links, genuity, ICN, I-2, UIUC to name a few. We expect this to continue through Monday but we can live with it for now... Most of the on-campus problems have been isolated. The Internet is fully reachable but slightly slower in some cases. We are still being hit with a constant 69Mb stream from UIUC. Hopefully they can resolve this before Monday morning when the core apps fire up. The following ports were shutdown yesterday. Some are entire networks, others are smaller chunks of networks. They will remain down until the infected SQL servers are patched or pulled from the net. >>>>vlan 177 port 4/13 part of 131.193.177.0 ccsel.networks.uic.edu ------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>vlan 208 port 4/7 cba in uh 131.193.209.0 and 208.0 ------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>vlan 32 CS 131.193.32.0 port 5/7 >>>>vlan43 (ECE/CE) 131.193.43.0 ports 5/8 >>>>vlan141 SSB ports 5/2-3 131.193.138,139,140 ------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>vlan 379 -dent port 2/4 128.248.79.0/97.0 ------------------------------------------------------------ >>>>vlan 355 MSB ports 4/7 & 6/5 128.248.55.0 ------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>vlan 391 ports 2/21-22 128.248.91.0 anatomy

Icarus to be down Sat. Jan 11 for system upgrade

Jan 08 2003 - Icarus, our main student email/web server, will be down for a significant period of time on Saturday January 11th so that we can install a complete hardware and OS upgrade.

Icarus will be shut down at 12:01am Saturday morning. If the upgrade goes very well, it may be back in production as early as 2pm, but complications could extend the downtime further into Saturday evening and/or night. We'll try to post updates here of any change in status.

The new hardware, a SunFire V880 from Sun Microsystems, will be twice as powerful as the current icarus (Sun E4000) and should provide significant improvements in response time.

We will also be upgrading the Solaris operating system from version 2.7 to Solaris8 (2.8). This Solaris upgrade is required to support the new hardware.

We're sorry for inconveniences caused by the upgrade, but we expect that the result (a faster and more stable system) should be worth the wait.

ADSM Upgrade Complete

Jan 01 2003 - The ADSM/Tivoli Storage Manager Server has now been converted to its new home - a much faster RS/6000 H80. It is now running in production mode, catching up with delayed backups.

You should not need to change anything to use the new server - it is still called adsm.cc.uic.edu. Files which you had backed up on the old server are available for restore on the new server - you do not need to do a new full backup. If you cannot contact it for some reason, doublecheck the TCPSERVERADDRESS line in your dsm.opt file to make sure you are not using some other name, such as a numeric IP address.

If you use the automatic backup scheduler, you will probably need to restart it, because it may have timed out during the downtime. The easiest way to do this is to simply reboot your whole computer.

If you have any trouble with this, contact datasave@uic.edu.

Thank you for your patience during the extended holiday downtime period, which allowed us to get this done right and also to have time to overcome the inevitable glitches without panic.

Happy New Year!
