network problems fixed

Sep 04 2003 - We should be at the end of this problem now. This morning we found that an OC-12 interface on our border ATM switch was cycling intermittently. For those who were following the routing problems via traceroute, it was the atm interface for router 31. This caused the loops that showed up between 31-32 and 41-42.

Recent attacks have targeted ATM LANE (LAN Emulation) interfaces, whether by intention or as a nasty side effect. We have been decommissioning ATM links in general and ATM LANE in particular. With the loss of the ATM interface to 31 today, we removed all internal ATM links within our core routers and reconfigured many internal links, installing additional backup paths. All test here show great improvement, with better traces than we have had in the past.

While testing via lots of traceroutes, we found today that there are a lot of dead spots out on the internet. Be advised that failure pinging or surfing to remote sites does not necessarily imply an internal UIC problem. Please try using traceroute to those sites to follow the flow and identify problem areas. If you log a problem, please include the trace.
