Eudora allows you to set up multiple personalities in a separate window pane. Just right-click in it and choose "New". Instead of the account setup wizard that opens, I recommended going directly to advanced setup. Recommended settings for each type of personality below.
You may have accounts on both mailserv and tigger (or icarus). Set up dual
personalities to check mail on both (I suggest using IMAP - don't forget to
include the IMAP mailboxes prefix of "mail/" and check
the box for checking mail. Any incoming Eudora filters
will act on both accounts, but server-side
filters are account-specific.
If you have an ISP mail account that supports POP or IMAP, you can also set
up an account for that. At your office machine, you however still need to use
smtpserv.cc.uic.edu as the outgoing mail server, whereas on a home computer
you'll need to enter your ISP's SMTP server as outgoing mail server for both
UIC and ISP personalities (unless you're dialing into UIC).
ACCC does not yet support authentication for sending mail, so leave that box
unchecked.
Unless you are using the UIC dialup lines, you will have an Internet Service Provider at home, which means you need to use their SMTP server for outgoing mail, as the UIC SMTP servers only accept mail from on-campus machines. If you are using a laptop, it is inconvenient to switch this setting everytime you take it from home to the office or vice versa. Setting up separate personalities simplifies this task:
Sometimes you need to send mail not as a person, but in a specific role or function, using a special mail address associated with that function, e.g. consult@uic.edu for the Client Services Office, or president@whitehouse.gov for you know who. For this purpose, you can set up personalities that never check mail, but just send out mail using the necessary return address. Note that to avoid being classified as spam, your messages need a valid MessageID header, and for that purpose it is still necessary to specify an incoming mail server (make it POP) and account name (your NetID), despite the fact that you will NOT be checking mail with this personality.
Especially when sending mail in some other role, it helps to have multiple
signatures defined that list contact info for the specific role. Create these
in the signatures pane (Window > Signatures, or use the tabs at
bottom left), then edit the personalities to use these signatures. Select the
personality in the personalities pane, right-click and choose "Properties",
then pick the default signature to use and click OK.
