Res-Net

Welcome to the Student Residence Halls Network Information Page.

Res-Net Description

Res-Net refers to network access available in UIC residence hall rooms. The network connection provides access to both

  • the Internet, through the use of standard applications like telnet, ftp, and a Web browser (e.g., Netscape)
  • optionally, Server Services, providing access to commonly used, popular software like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Corel Office (WordPerfect, Quattro, Paradox), Corel Draw, Photoshop and others.

Res-Net Status (updated 1/26/99)

The buildings that are ready are Commons North, Commons South,Commons West and Courtyard.

Update(1/26/99): Connections in Commons West are ready.

While these are the first buildings to be wired, all UIC residence halls will eventually be wired. This includes Single Student Residence, Polk Street Residence, Student Residence Hall. Watch this page here for the latest information.

(++)Of the machines supplied by these vendors, please choose those that have the Novell Certification. The list of machines that are Novell-certified can be found at http://developer.novell.com/infosys/1014.htm.

Note: All reasonable attempts will be made to set up your machine and get it working on the network, but you should know that we have not been able to get some to run on the network. If reasonable attempts fail, we will provide you with an explanation and suggestions for possible solutions.

Moves and Cancellations

Your connection will be active for the academic year (i.e. from the time you request it to the end of spring semester). You will be responsible for the charges during this time unless we are notified that you wish to cancel your network connection. Refunds are done for full months only.

If you are moving to another room and wish to keep your network connection, you must inform the ACCC of the move at least one week in advance (watch this space for instructions). This also applies to the moves required at the end of spring or summer semesters. Connections that do not request a move will be canceled.

Printing

Students would need to supply a personal printer to print to or if they have Server Services, printing can be setup to go the closest lab printer.

Support

Residents with computer or network related questions can

  1. Visit a consultant on duty in one of the labs
  2. Call or visit the Client Services Office (CSO)
  3. Log a problem via e-mail to consult@uic.edu

If the problem turns out to be a hardware problem that requires a service call, you can take the machine to MicroStation for assistance or place a service call with the ACCC by sending mail to consult@uic.edu.
Service Calls are subject to a fee of $35/hour with a minimum of one. The call will be charged to your student account.
Responsibility for procuring new or replacement hardware lies with the machine owner.

Res-Net e-mail list

There is an e-mail list, res-net@uic.edu that residents with network connections are subscribed to. Students that sign up for network connections will automatically be subscribed to this e-mail list.

You can subscribe to the list by sending mail to listserv@listserv.uic.edu with the following line of text in the body

sub res-net your name goes here

For example,

sub res-net John Doe

Feel free to use the list to ask questions to your fellow network connected residents.

To remove your name from the list, please send the following message to listserv@listserv.uic.edu

Getting Res-Net: The Steps

1) Request the Network Connection and Optionally, Server Services

The dorm resident interested in obtaining these services should complete a form, available at three locations:

  • available online (preferred),
  • the Housing Office (east or west side),
  • Client Services Office (2267 SEL).

The following information must be provided:

  • name
  • e-mail address
  • social security number
  • phone
  • building, room number and jack number (jack is the outlet in the wall that the phone and computer connection plug into, it is a letter followed by three numbers, e.g. V003)
  • machine type, brand and model
  • if you have an ethernet card or if you will need us to provide one.
  • type of service that you are requesting:
    • network connection,
    • network connection with Server Services or
    • just Server Services (you must have a network connection already)
  • and, finally, agree to abide by the Res-Net policies.

The ACCC will get your request and process it within one week.

2) ACCC Establishes the Network Connection

When the network connection is established, a packet containing the following will be dropped at the Housing Desk:

  • NSKit CD ROM
  • network cable
  • installation and configuration instructions.

You will be notified via e-mail and/or phone when this happens.

In addition, if your room already has a network connection, a hub will be installed in the room. This will allow for the new connection to be available.

3) Network Connection and/or Server Services Setup

Essentially, all the pieces are now in place to finish the installation and configuration of the hardware and software necessary to connect to the UIC network and gain access to the Internet.

  • Do it yourself?
    • install the network card
    • configure the operating system
    • install the Network Services Kit CD ROM
    • optionally, install and set up Server Services
(See last column in table below for further details)
  • Have the ACCC or Micro/Station assist in the installation and configuration (see Setup and Miscellaneous Charges).

Special Offer for Setup

For two weeks after network connections are ready in a building, the ACCC will set up a desk to assist users in installing their network cards and configuring the machine for network access (check special pricing). To receive this service, Residence Hall residents will need to bring their CPU only to the location listed below:

Nothing scheduled

Last machine accepted at 6:30pm or earlier if we have a large number of machines to setup. We will spend no more than half an hour trying to get a machine to work during this time. Should a machine require more than an hour, a service call will be placed and the machine will be set up at a later time.
