Server Services for the Macintosh

Downloading and Installation

To be able to follow the instructions in this document, all of the following conditions must be true: You must be using a Macintosh with at least 8 megabytes of RAM, be running the 7.0 version (or later) of the Macintosh operating system and you must have a functioning Network connection. You should already have contacted lan@uic.edu and received your login name and context.

Follow these instructions to download the ACCC Server Services client:

  1. Create a temporary folder on your desktop named SStemp.
  2. Open the Fetch folder and open the program by double-clicking on the Fetch icon.
  3. Type:
    ftp.uic.edu
    in the Host field
  4. For login name type:
    anonymous
(these commands are all case-sensitive, so be sure to maintain all upper and lower case letters when you type in these commands)
  5. For the password, type in your whole email address, for example:
    netid@uic.edu
  6. Set the directory to:
    /pub/depts/adn/server_services/mac
  7. Select the Macintosh NW Client Installer.Bin file by double-clicking on it. Fetch will prompt you to select the folder on your Macintosh where you wish to save the file. Select the temporary folder you just made, SStemp, and click Save. While Fetch saves the file to your computer you will see a running dog icon; when the icon stops the downloading is complete.
  8. Once the file is downloaded, quit Fetch.

Installing the NWCLIENT

  1. Once the file has been downloaded, open the SStemp folder and double-click on the NWCLIENT Installer.Bin file; NWCLIENT Installer automatically starts the installation process. A box appears asking you if you wish to continue the installation process. Click Continue.
  2. The next box that appears asks you whether you want to customize the installation. We suggest using a standard installation. Click Install.
  3. The Installer tells you that you will need to restart your Macintosh when installation is completed. Click Continue.
  4. After installing you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click Restart. When the computer is restarted you will see a Novell icon (tree without leaves) in the menu bar near the clock. You are now ready to start NWCLIENT.

Using Server Services

Logging in the First Time

To log in to Server Services you need to know your tree, your context, login name and password. You should have received this information from lan@uic.edu. If you do not have the information available or never contacted them, send an email to lan@uic.edu asking to set up Server Services.

  1. Go to the Novell tree icon and pull the menu down. Select Login . . .
  2. The first time you log in you must select More Options from the login dialog box. A new dialog box will appear with tree, context, name and password fields.
  3. Fill all of the fields in except for password.
  4. Click Login.
  5. Once logged in you will prompted to set your password.

NOTE: Your password must be at least 4 characters long and it will expire every 31 days, at which time you will asked (but not required) to change it.

Installing Software

To install Server Services software you must first mount a sever on your desktop using these steps:

  1. Go into the Netware Client Utilities folder and double-click on the Netware Directory Browser icon.
  2. A Browser dialog box appears. At the top of the box is the Tree pull down menu, be sure that UNIVERSITY_OF_ILLINOIS_CHICAGO is selected.
  3. In the area just below the pull-down menu click on the UIC icon. A new set of icons appears in that space and UIC appears in the pull down menu.
  4. Double-click on the COMP icon and, once again, a new set of icons appears and COMP appears in the pull-down menu.
  5. Scroll down until you find the ODIN_MACS_APPS icon. Double-click on it and it will be mounted onto your desktop.
  6. The ODIN_MAC_APPS icon will appear as a file cabinet on your desktop, double-click on it and a folder containing all Macintosh software available from ACCC Server Services will open.
IMPORTANT: There are three different categories of software listed in this folder:
  1. The first are installed simply by clicking on the icon in the folder (e.g. Fetch 3.0.1.).
  2. The second need to be installed partially on your machine in order to run but have an installer program already created. Just double-click on the installer to put these programs on your machine (e.g. MS Word).
  3. The third kind of software must be "manually" installed. These software have two folders located on the ODIN_MAC_APPS volume: the software folder and the software configuration folder. You must actually drag certain items from the software's configuration folder into specific folders on your machine in order to install the software properly (e.g. SPSS). These items will be marked clearly (e.g. "Place Contents in Extensions" or "Place Contents in Preferences"). Once you have manually installed the proper items onto your machine you can go to the software folder and double-click on the program icon to launch the software.

Logging In and Out:

  1. To log in, go to the Novell Tree icon pull-down menu and select Log In . . . Type in your login and password in the dialog box that appears. When you have logged in the Novell Tree icon will sprout leaves.
  2. To log out, go to the Novell Tree icon pull-down menu and select Log Out. A dialog box will appear asking if you are sure you want to log out. Click Log Out.

  3.

Changing Your Password:

When you are logged in you can change your password by going to the Novell Tree icon and pull-down menu and selecting Change Password . . . In the dialog box that appears type in your old password and your new password twice.

Resources
To see your resources you must mount the ODIN_DATA volume on your machine. See the instructions above on how to mount a volume on your machine using the Netware Directory Browser.
  1. Open the ODIN_DATA icon located on your desktop (after you have mounted it).
  2. Inside there will be at least two folders, Home and Shared.
  • The Home folder is your personal home space (nobody else has access to it). (Write Access)
  • The Shared folder is the common shared directory for your department. (Write Access.)
