Server Services for Windows 9x

Download and Installation

To be able to follow the instructions in this document, you must meet all of the following conditions: You must be using Windows 9x, you must be using the built-in Windows 9x TCP/IP communication software, you must have a functioning Network connection, and you should have already contacted lan@uic.edu and received your login name and context.

If you are upgrading a Windows 3x machine that also had the NWCLIENT installed on it, to a Windows 9x machine, you will need to first follow these procedures before continuing.

Please click on the following link to download the Netware Client and save it to a temporary space.

  1. Click the Start button and select Run.
  2. Type:
    C:\adntemp\english\setup.exe
    and then click OK.
  3. The Program will ask you to read the License Agreement, click Yes to read it.
  4. Click Start to start the installation process. The installation process should only take a minute or two.
  5. You will be asked if you wish to set certain properties. Click on Yes to configure NWCLIENT. The Novell Netware Client 32 Properties box will open.
  6. For the first tab "Client 32" use the following settings:
    • For Preferred Server, leave it blank,
    • For the Preferred Tree enter:
      University_of_Illinois_Chicago
    • For the Name Context enter your name context. For example:
      mkdg.vchs.uic.

NOTE: When you set up your account, lan@uic.edu should have sent you a reply which included YOUR context. If you don't have the reply you can email lan@uic.edu to get your context. (We generally use the netid, so you can try that if you don't know your login name.)

  7. Now click OK. The system will ask you if you want to reboot. Click Yes. It may also ask you for the Win9x CD to retrieve certain files.

Using Server Services

Logging in for the first time

The first time that you login, use the login name that was given to you by lan@uic.edu. You can skip the password (press Enter), and it will ask you if you want to change your password. At this point you should press Yes and enter a new password; press Tab and reenter your password to confirm it. Your password must be at least 4 characters long and will expire every 31 days. It is recommended that you change it at least this often although it will not require you to change it.

Creating the Winstall Shortcut

The next step is to create a Winstall icon on your desktop so that you can install software from our servers.

  1. Right-click anywhere on your Windows 9x desktop (not on an icon), a menu will appear. Click New and then click on Shortcut.
  2. In the Command box, type:
    w:\\winst2\winstall.exe
  3. Leave the default Winstall as the name.
  4. Click finish and a Winstall icon will appear on your desktop.

Installing Software with Winstall

  1. Double click on the Winstall icon. A dialog box will appear with all of the software available from ACCC Server Services. If the software doesn't appear in the dialog box, contact lan@uic.edu.
  2. Select the software you wish to install and click Install. The server will send you only the files necessary to configure the program for that particular machine. The main portion of the program is located out on the server.
(NOTE: Not all software listed in the window is available to all departments. Some of them are site-licensed only for specific departments and thus require a password to install them. Most of the software included with ACCC Server Services start with an ADN prefix.)

Logging On and Off the Network

The login appears automatically when you start your machine, but you may need to re-enter your login if, for example, you get disconnected from the server or need to login somewhere else. To log on without rebooting, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button, then Programs, then on Novell, and then Novell Login.
  2. A Password dialog box will appear. Enter your login name and password.
And follow these steps to log off:
  1. Double click on Network Neighborhood.
  2. Click on UIC_ADN_ODIN or UIC_ADN_FREYA(depending on which server you connect to) with the RIGHT mouse button, then click on Logout.

Changing Your Password

  1. Click the Start button, then on Settings, then on Control Panels.
  2. Now double click on Passwords.
  3. Select "Change Other Password" then select "Novell Netware" and then "Change".
  4. Now enter your old password, press tab and enter your new password, then press tab again and enter your new password again to confirm it.
  5. You will then receive two message windows telling you that your password has been successfully changed. Just click OK for both.
NOTE: Your password must be at least 4 characters and it automatically expires every 31 days. If you have not changed it after 31 days, you will be prompted to change it at each login. It will not require you to change it, but it is highly recommended.
