Configuring PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) for Modem/telephone Use (for Windows NT 3.5x).

Starting the PPP Setup:

It is assumed that no network is installed on the machine.

  • Go to Control Panel, and double click on Network Icon.
  • In the Network Settings window, make sure both "RAS" and "TCP/IP" are listed.

In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both "Dial-up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed, but make sure that they are listed ONLY ONCE. If there is more than one listing for either of these, be sure to remove one of them by clicking on the item and then clicking on the Remove button.

Setting up the RAS (if not listed)

If the RAS is not listed:

  • Click on the Add Software... button.
  • Select Remote Access Service and then click on the Add... button
  • Select RAS in the Network Settings Windows as in ppp setup and click on Configure.
  • In the Remote Access Setup, the modem, and its COM Port will be displayed, make sure they are correct.
  • If correct then click on Network, otherwise click on Configure and select the correct modem and COM Port.

Setting up TCP/IP Protocol (if not listed)

If TCP/IP is not listed:

  • Click on the Add Software... button.
  • Select TCP/IP and then click on the Add... button.

  • It will bring back the Network Settings Windows, make sure the Computer Name, and Workgroup names are specified, if not, then specify by clicking on Change.
  • Make sure there are no Bindings checked.
  • Click on Continue to finish the Network Configuration.
  • Windows may ask for Windows NT 3.5x disks or a CD-ROM.
  • It may also ask to restart Windows NT 3.5x. This is necessary for the changes to take effect.

Setting your UIC Dial-In Connection

  • Once you are back in Windows NT 3.5x, locate the Remote Access Service Folder in program manager, and double click on Remote Access icon.

  •  Remove the check mark from "Authenticate using current user name and  password."
  •  Click on Advanced to view the Advanced Settings, (if already in Advanced,  then it will show Basic).
  •  Make sure the Port is correct for your modem.
  •  Click on Modem, select the highest possible speed !(read the footnote to  specify the speeds higher than 38400 bps)! and put check mark in all three Hardware features (Flow control, Error control, and Compression), don't put check mark on "Enter modem commands manually."

  •   In the Terminal or Script section, select "None" for before dialing, and "Terminal" for After dialing.
  •  Click Ok.
  •  Click OK one more time to finish Phone Book Entry.
  • You are now ready to dial.
  • In addition, you may also want to setup another connection icon to automatically dial the second number (in case the first is busy) or to use the Dialin-Express line (which allows you only 10 minutes, but is seldom busy). Simply follow the above procedure again (starting with Setting your UIC Dial-in Connection). Name the connection something besides UIC-1 (UIC-2, for example), and use either the other phone numbers listed above, or the express number 413-3332. Connecting to UIC

Now you are ready to dial and connect to UIC.

  • Highlight the newly created entry in the Remote Access Window, and click on Dial.
  • The Terminal screen will appear after the connection, enter your username, and password, then at the DIALIN-#> enter PPP then click on Done twice.
  • Minimize the Remote Access, and you are ready to run any Network program.
  • You can also select "Minimize on Dial" from Options pull down menu in Remote Access, so you don't have to minimize it everytime.
