Configuring PPP for Modem Use in Windows NT 4.x

NOTE: You MUST be logged in as the System Administrator (User: Administrator) in order to configure dial-up networking!

Configuring the Modem

  • To begin modem configuration, go to Control Panel in Windows NT by clicking on the Start Menu, then on Settings, then on Control Panel.
  • Double-Click on Modems.
  • If you do not already see your modem listed, click on "Add." This will go through the process of adding your modem to the system configuration.
  • Select your modem name brand from the list, or use the disk provided by the manufacturer.
  • Once you've configured your modem properly, you should see a dialog box listing the installed modems for that computer, with yours on that list. Click OK to return to the Control Panel.

Configuring Network Properties

  • If Dial-Up Networking is not installed, go to the Control Panel, and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  • Then click on the "Windows NT Setup" tab. Click on "Communications" and then click on "Details." Make sure that the "Phone Dialer" has an X next to it. If it does not, click on the box next to it and click OK to install it.
  • Again, go to the Control Panel and double-click on Network.
  • In order for Dial-Up Networking to be enabled, a Remote Access Service must be added to the services avaliable in Network Properties. Click on the "Services" tab in Network Properties. If you do not see "Remote Access Serivce" listed as one of the services, click on Add. A new dialog box will pop up, which will allow you to select the Remote Access Service. Once you have it selected, click OK.
  • Click on the "Protocols" tab. Make sure that you see the TCP/IP Protocol listed as one of the installed protocols. If not, click on Add, and select the TCP/IP Protocol from the list. Then click OK to install TCP/IP.
  • You should not edit the properties of the TCP/IP protocol, so simply click OK to exit the Network Properties.

Setting up the Phonebook Entry

  • In order to set up a new phonebook entry, double-click on My Computer. Then double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Dial-Up Networking will say that you do not have an entry in the phonebook (presuming you just installed Dial-Up Networking). Click OK to add a new phonebook entry.
  • The Phonebook Entry wizard will ask you to begin to provide a name for your connection. Click on "I am familiar with the phonebook entry and would like to edit my own properties," and then click on Finish.
  • This will bring up the phonebook properties for the UIC Connection. On the "Basic" tab, type in the name for your Connection (UIC-1) and the phone number for your connection.
  • The phone numbers to dial into UIC are as follows:
    • (312) 413-9090 (33.6 line)
    • (312) 413-9111 (28.8 line)
    • (312) 413-3200 (14.4 line)
  • Click on the Server tab, and make sure that TCP/IP is the protocol checked. Click on "TCP/IP Settings" and make sure that "Obtain an IP Address automatically" is checked. Then type in the following IP Addresses under the DNS Configuration Settings:
    • 128.248.2.50
    • 128.248.7.50
  • Click on the Script tab, and make sure that "Pop up terminal window" is checked. Then click OK.
  • Double click on your UIC connection, put in your Administrator password, and click OK. Your modem will dial out, and a terminal window will pop up that will request you to log in. Log in with your ADN account username and password. At the Dialin Server prompt, type "PPP" (minus the quotes). Then hit ENTER and click on the "continue" button. You will then be connected to UIC.
